My speedometer quit a few months ago before my 318/904 to 440/727 swap. Still doesn’t work after the swap. Cable is new and good.

What are my options? I haven’t seen any new ones. Is there anything I should look for in the unit itself? Before it died the needle bounced side to side horribly. ‘70 Belvedere.

Your speedo needs to be inspected and then overhauled. There are many reputable shops out there. I found a local one after an internet search, and they rebuilt mine as good as new.

While you are at it, if the dial faces are yellowed out, you should get them refaced as well. see http://www.performancecargraphics.com/

How much? Mine bounces now and then liked described above. Probably only a matter of time?

I had my speedo refaced and rebuilt.......but went another direction. $200.00 shipped..

if the dash cluster is the same,i have one complete that worked out of a 70 coronet.
car had extremely low miles and cluster is in excellent shape.
its just sitting on the shelf,if you can use it whatevers fair is what takes it.

A quick way of narrowing it down to the speedo itself, unhook the cable at the cruise control servo (or at the transmission if non CC) and use a drill to spin the cable. The cables are wound to spin fast in one direction so take it easy at first until you find out the right direction. Since there's no way of doing that without looking at the gauges I recorded a video centered on the speedo while I was up front running the drill.

Probably wouldn't apply to you since it seems you're using two completely different speedo gear pinions but when I reinstalled my pinion gear and housing I didn't sand off the bore surface to a complete polish. It had that rough exterior transmission paint coating. That tiny detailed caused my pinion to be off and not contacting the worm gears which results in a dead speedo.

As jogirob mentioned, test to see if the speedometer is actually working. You have only 3 possibilities.
a. Speedometer broken internally
b. Cable not turning the speedometer (broken)
c. Gear in transmission not turning cable (not seated as mentioned or transmission drive gear worn out).
