A500/A518 overdrive mileage / cost/work..worth it ?

Thanks, that a-bodies thread is a good reading. Could that be difference between 500/518?

Yes! The 500/904 based unit is much thinner.
The 518/727 based unit is a big girl!

The OD unit is the same
it's the bellhousing and top of trans that's bigger and you know 727's fit
check around where your U joint is now that's about where the big spot on an OD is
you should have no problems with an OD in a VAN

Can anyone confirm how A500 fit in 68-70 b-body?

Hey wyemrider your mailbox is full. Could you empty it I have a question thanks

Both the 500 and 518 have the same amount of pudge at the end of the main case where the od unit/extension housing bolts on as they share the same od unit. 500 is a minor amount shorter overall length. Some early 518's were non lock up but that changed around 90. 500's were all lockup. Whatever mods you would do on a 904/727 can be done to the 500/518's. If you go non lock up, you run standard, less expensive converters. A-bodies have less room at the crossmember area than b or e's so expect more work to get it in. The od units can be beefed by using the extra clutches and steels from the v10/cummins applications. They varied by what was in front of them. V6,v8 etc and application. Dakota, truck, van, 1500, 2500, 3500 etc. Also the main clutches and steels in the main case varied that way plus your planetaries. 3 pinion, 4, 5 etc. A GV unit is close to 3k for new plus install, used can be had for less but you may spend it right back up there if the used one is worn out. Found that one out the hard way, at least I hadn't used it yet, when I thought I scored a used one for $200 then had them freshen it[ was toast] and swap out the adaptor unit plus shaft to what I needed. Since I'm running a b-motor, there was no 518 that would fit without big bucks to spend. Lots of choices out there, you just have to pick your poison.
