Hi guys. Rebuilt my 440 this winter and was wondering about replacing the starter. What would be a good choice ?
Thanks

I like the Dakota Mini Starter (get it at any Napa & great warranty)
lots of clearance small 4:1 reduction (IIRC) & does the job well
disclaimer;
only issue is clearance on the 1/4-20 main 12vt post
needs to be cut down 3/16"-1/4" or so,
just so it doesn't come as close or hit the block (on some blocks)
they make kits to get it away too, but a little trim does the job

for a hi-compression racing engine
maybe go with the PowerMaster (Summit Racing)
or MSD (more $$$)
version of the clock-able style mini starters

Agree with the Dodge Dakota starter. It has plenty of torque to turn over my 440, the headers don't
seem to bother it (they clear) and if it ever lays down, hey, free lifetime replacement at whatever chain auto parts
store you fetched it from.
Brand new they're around $100; rebuilt about $70.

I've been running a NIPPONDENSO mini for years... no issues performance/starting wise.

This was posted by another member. Look under starter parts then Denso or search p/n's.

Thanks to all you guys. Your comets are greatly appreciated. I get a good discount at CARQUEST so I think I will go with the Dakota route. Good to hear from you all. May God bless and happy racing or crusing.

I use the Dakota Mini Starter from O'Rielly's. $100 bucks. Has worked fine for 2 years on my 750HP 505" Drag Race Coronet. Fit like a glove. I think it even has a lifetime warranty....but the rub is..if it fails, it is a pain to replace a starter...but been fine for 2 years.

Years ago I bought one from DB Electric on Ebay, $63, free shipping. I've bought several since then for different cars. They're all still working. I have one in my racecar and I've been throwing 16 volts at it for two years now. We'll see how long this one lasts. I carry a spare just in case.
