Factory Spring-Loaded Hood Bumpers Taller and Thicker Than Repo

I found one of my original taller, thicker (compared to repro) factory hood bumpers is still serviceable (left in first foto, right in second foto), so I put it back on. Did not compare the two pieces previously. Spring diameter and post support are also different.

Got a nice OEM one if you need a replacement. No cracks at the screw holes, no broken feet, spring NOT rusted in half. Just some discoloration of the plastic and some small traces of light blue paint over spray.

I have the mating hood adjuster but it has a broken foot,. Could be used for parts, spare spring, spare wedge etc. And I have all of the 4 original OEM screws.

Here's a pic of the good one.

Sorry... I meant what's the function or how they interact with the hood
 
There is a rectangular notch in the sheet metal with a triangular profile indentation that mates with those sprung wedges.

When the hood closes all the way they help center it and provide some tension.

If they are not installed (or not engaged properly) the hood can shake at speed.

E body cars are way worse about this.
 
I've put spacers under them so they engage more positively.

Perhaps the repro design is trying to incorporate this.
 
I thought you said the repros were thicker.

They look taller in the pics.

yeap I noticed those notches, symply didn't understand why those wedges instead regular rubber pieces
 
Interesting thread. I don't believe I have those. I simply have 2 rubber bumpers as shown near the hood pins. Were they not used in 73 and up? Where do they go?
EDIT: I think I see them now in my pics, back by the hinges ... that them?

My 74 SE has them near the hood pins... i got new ones and remember matching them to the old ones, they seemed exact to me. Got the new ones from Detroit muscle.
 
Yeah, I looked at the hundreds of pictures of engine bays I have taken over the years at Carlisle and I see the rubber bumpers in the front, and the spring loaded in the back behind the hinges opposite the cowl.
I haven't been out to the garage yet but I'm guessing that is where I put mine after paint. Gawd I'm getting forgetful! :screwy:
 
I'm pretty sure my 73 doesn't have those


Look for two screw holes (approx 1/8 dia) that are spaced apart 1-3/4" near the cowl area. If you see that, those are the screw holes to mount these hood springs. I'm pretty sure that most of these 71-4 B Body cars had those springs missing through out the life of the car via being removed or broken off.

Turns out I have two pairs of these hood springs, I can make a descent pair out of the 4 that I have if anyone in here needs them.
