I'm not familiar enough with newer Hemis, so anyone have some insight? I found, locally, a 2006 from a truck for $350. Owner says it overheated and "needs head gaskets". I realize it will need more than that, but as a builder, is it something to check out? Will the heads survive overheating, etc? If it were cast iron, I wouldn't second guess it. Thanks

I've heard they drop valve seats when overheated and cause more internal damage to pistons etc..

Thanks. I found this online. If he has the heads off, I can probably tell what damage is done

I found some info that valve springs were redesigned in '06. Plus, I would have it rebuilt anyway and change the springs to eliminate that hazard.

My wife's 2005 5.7 Durago goes real well. When I get on it, from 3000 to 6000 the thing is amazing. I can only imagine a performance built version. Maybe should have built one instead of my 512.

For what it's worth, mine is an '04 with 170k miles on it and not one lick of
trouble yet.

I've already had to replace the radiator, in fact. Seems the gasket between the
aluminum core and the plastic tanks gives up after time?
In any event, first thing I did when I bought the truck new way back then was replace the stock thermostat with a 180F one - not so much out of any fears of future issues, but that I don't like any engine running as hot as they do them these days.
(Spare me the explanations and excuses for why they can do that - I wanted the thing to run cooler intentionally, for better or worse, from the get-go.)
She's also never had anything other than Mobil1 in her, too.
The 5.7 has been absolutely bulletproof.

OH, almost forgot the OP's question:
If it's me, that particular engine would be totally rebuilt, including spending some time at the machine shop to square away flat surfaces and every dang thing else you do when you properly rebuild one.
If somebody gets away with just head gaskets, they need to immediately buy lottery tickets afterwards.

Well he messaged back and he no longer has the heads on it, just a block and the internals. I'm waiting for him to tell me what he wants for it

Aftermarket heads are available or later heads from the factory will bolt right on.
