OK as I work on everything all at once bouncing from one part of the car to the next I find myself in need of one sealed high beam bulb. I can get one at Autozone or Napa.

Because I bought such a basket case I don’t know but assume the high beams run on the outer positions correct? I seem to recall this from the seventies but not sure if it was the standard across the board.

Also was wondering who is running those cool looking yellow fog lights in place of the high beams?

I like the original look and wonder if anyone is also running any LED’s?

High Beams are inboard. Lots of guys have switched to the LED style ,
I still use the regular sealed beam , high/low sets.

Yup, high beams are inboard....and if I'm not mistaken, the outboards are double filament bulbs ie, they also get brighter when you hit the button but the high beams are single filament bulbs and only light up on high.

Yep.. outers are Hi/Lo and inners are Hi.

Low beam..

My X has the same headlights it was born with back in 68. Good enough then good enough now.

Thanks guys good information here and on the links.
I am still trying to decipher the various part number differences and wonder if there is a consolidated reference. 4001 vs 5001 etc. fot both high and low beams.
I believe the older ones like the 4001 is a tungsten element but are all the newer “equivalents” hallogen? What about physical size ad well? Also current draw differences would be great to know.

It's all in my thread: https://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/threads/high-low-beams-suggestions-needed.168090/

I'm saving my G.E. originals in my gun safe! I bought a bunch of G.E. Halogen bulbs awhile
back from Rock Auto when they were clearancing them out. I've seen people try to sell the
originals for ridiculous prices, and I know there's tons of them still out there. The new L.E.D.'s
look very nice if they'd only come down in price.

Yellow fog lights like these? 5 3/4" GE bulbs for export. Bought on ebay...

Moparfeind,
Perhaps you should consider the latest venu....HID lamps...which means High Intensity Discharge or metal halide lamps. These lamps provide approximately 5X more light while using only 2-3 amps. The system uses a special ballast and ignitor assembly (which change 12v DC to a higher operating voltage thru the use if special components and electronics) and a few simple wiring changes. Complete systems are available from several on line suppliers. You may consider a LED system, also available from the same suppliers as well. For my money, i really like the HID system. Just google HID automobile head lamp conversation systems. There are several on line "how to" video's outlining installations and the pros and cons of the different systems. Not inexpensive but definitely worth the cost and effort. Just my opinion of course.

Change out your outer sealed beams for dual filament bulbs and you'll have both.
Currently I have duel filament “low” beam and a 4001 high beam. So when I hit the high beam all 4 light up as I just tested to verify. So I would think I would need another circuit for fog lights only? The also would need to be like 55W to be effective alone. But I understand what your saying.

Just set up the lights. All three looked like 1968 bulbs except for the halogen I got today. At some point I might upgrade with a couple of relays at the mininum. Pic work in progress...

I don’t like modern headlights on old cars. I run halogen sealed beams on my 67 coronet and they actually works quite well, better than headlights on a lot of the other cars I have. but the Hella h4 European conversion lights work really well also. and yes I have yellow fog lights in the center high-beam. The outers are hi-low

Correctly adjusted stock upgrade halogen sealed beams are quite enough for me ( as mentioned hi/low outers, high inners ). Actually with them I barelly have to switch to highs.

I HATE those bright white lights coming down the road over my face! They really get me blind. I usually have to brake down when they come:upyours: :elmer:

So I would think I would need another circuit for fog lights only?

Yes! Thats how must be made! E bodies for fog/road lamps in fact got that separated switch.

On my 74 Charger I have an extra RR DEFFOG switch that I'm planning to use to some extra lighting since weren't optioned back in the days, using low speed position for an underhood light, and high position to road lights ( no need for both at the same time obviouslly ). Will fabricate the switch bezel for this lettering. Having the factory provision for these switches is nice, since won't need to drill or cut anything on dash. Three provisions on mine where just one is being used. No ram hood, no any other just the rr deff, so have two provisions left.

I am also a fan of the Hella halogen conversion. Has a stock appearance at a glance, but bright well defined beam patterns. Sealed beam halogens dont compare, IMHO. LED's and plastic lens don't work for me. Of course with my car having headlight doors, probably not a big deal anyway.
