This may sound like a dumb question, but hydraulic lifters aren't supposed to push in?

They will after sitting sometimes, but they should stay pretty hard. Usually just a small piece of dirt in them if they do collapses, easy to take apart, clean, reassemble and prime on a drill press.

Ok I can push my finger in it easily though. A friend of mine said I can try and primer it back up but I didn't know whether to do that or go and buy a new one.

When in doubt & since it sounds like it's already out, I'd replace it & smear the new one with cam break in lube.

I had one out of 16 that was soft.. car sitting 14 years! I pulled them all one at a time, tested / primed and put back. Only one I had to spend 10 minutes to take apart, clean, put back together and prime. Engine runs like a top. I'd be doing that first before chancing a new lifter on an old cam lob getting along.
