I've been having issues with the 2BBL carb I installed on my stock 273, and decided this would be a good time to upgrade to a 4bbl. Engine has been rebuilt to stock specs if that contributes to any advice. I have an Edelbrock LD4B intake coming my way and I need some advice on what carb to use. I don't want to throw a lot of money at this, as I plan to drop a 440 that I have in it eventually. Just want a nice little cruiser in the mean time. So now I'm looking for a carb, just don't know what to look for. I'm wondering if I should look for an old core and have that re-built, or if I should buy something that's newer and used. What CFM should I look for? What kind of secondaries?

THANKS GUYS!

Agreed don't go big, 600 cfm max but that's even more then you'll need. You'll get all kinds of answers on type and it's mostly preference, I like Holley style carbs like Quickfuel, Demon, Holley and have had great luck with Quadrajets as well but despise any Carter type carb but that's just me. If I was in your shoes I'd shop for a low use carb that somebody already bit the bullet on.

I'm in the small camp crowd too. 500CFM will be plenty, 600 max.

Something along this line.

Keep in mind you will need to get the throttle adapter, as well as swapping the throttle cable bracket from a 2V version to a 4v version.

Oh, and you might consider a dual throttle return spring while you're at it.

Don't forget if its an auto you will need to modify the kick down linkage. Now may be a good time to go to a cable type kick down you can always use it when you put the 440 in.

I have an NOS 1965 383 AFB carb. Missing a few links, that went to a hemi carb 40 years ago. PM IF INTERESTED...

See the pics, make offer around $150. shipped!

And with an AFB, the rears open only enough for engine requirements!

Will this work on my small block 273 with auto trans? Are those missing links hard to find?
I'm a HUUGGEEE rookie, so I'm kind of at your mercy here.

You could find a 273 AFB core cheap and transfer the jets/metering rods to the NOS one.... Also, the missing links.
If you go big block later, put the original jets/metering rods back.
Better than an aftermarket, multiuse carb, IMO.

those early big block AFB's don't have velocity controlled secondaries. this was ok with the 383/413/426 because they were small carbs for a big block. but, deduct 100-150cuin's and it's a different ball game. the hipo 273 AFB was smaller but had velocity controlled secondaries. the 273 hipo AFB would be a good choice but if you want an automatic choke you'll have to jump thru some hoops.

Gentlemen,
My 2 cents worth.....use what MOPAR used....either a Carter 3854S (65 Barracuda Formula S HP 273) OR a Carter 4294s (67 Barracuda Formula S HP 273) OR a 68 Barracuda 340 4 speed car...Carter AVS (First year production) but you will need to redrill the carb base to match manifold studs. Everything fits (linkage, fuel line, air cleaner) and looks like belongs there. DO NOT OVER CARB .... or the low end performance will be significantly ....low part throttle mixture velocity resulting in stumbling. You will need to rejet according to spark plug readings. I had a 67 Plymouth Belevidere II with a LA 318 (2 bbl Stromberg WWC3), and converted it using the Mopar HP 273 single plane 4 BBL manifold and a Carter 3854S carb and a Prestolite dual point distributor. The car was a A727A trans and a 3.23 rear end...great street combo....decent fuel mileage (15-18 mpg). The 383 carb is a little big ...IMHO.
