Here there and everywhere.
Hi there everyone.lve got a question regarding what type of transmission fluid should I use for my 73 satellite sebring? According to the actual 1973 service manual it says to use Dexron type fluid, but I'm just wondering with all the new technology around nowadays if l should use something like ATF +4 by MOPAR of course.

No problem, it appears to just be personal preference. I use ATF4.

Regular street car Dexron is fine. And much cheaper. I ran Walmart Dexron in my 900hp drag car with no ill effects. Clutches and band looked great on check ups.

Regular Dexron 3 is fine. All the new fluids have additives in them that our trannys simply don’t need. But if makes u feel better u can use almost anything. Kim

Here's another question I'd like to ask, does anyone know if tranny fluid like the ATF4 l mentioned earlier have a shelf life? I tried Googling it but the answers there weren't to clear at all

I can’t locate Dex3 at any local parts store but it’s ATF4 in the 727s for me.

We ran type f for 14 yrs behing a s/s type hemi engine . I have type F in my 505" wedge / 727 right now , been in there for about 8ish yrs..
Same here, Type F is all I ever used. Can't remember what the difference is but I know it was preferred for snappier shifts, the B&M shift kits always recommended either their brand of oil or type F.

Dexron is available just about anywhere, well around here it is. It's what my Trans guy and Mechanic recommended to me for my 71 lemans (older gent with classic cars, 67 Chevelle, Falcon, 73 Charger, 70 Torino) in the business for over 30 years. He always recommends to use what the manual says you should use. But to each his own...

This may help:
"After 1955, Chrysler used Dexron transmission fluid until 2001." https://www.hemmings.com/blog/article/your-cars-vital-fluids-part-ii/
"The good news is that all the new ATF lubricants are backward compatible. That is, Dexron-VI can be used in all GM transmissions back to the beginning. The same is true for Chrysler’s ATF+4 for all prior Chrysler transmissions unless Dexron was specified, and Mercon V for Ford transmissions." https://www.oldcarsweekly.com/restoration/automatic_transmission_fluid

I would argue that on a new build you could use whatever you want as long as you stay with it, regardless of what any manufacture suggested.

Argue whatever you like, not trying to convince anyone, like i said to each his own, i am no expert so i rely on experts for their advice. If my charger's manual says dexron with sprinkles of fairy dust, i'll buy dexron and hunt down a fairy and make them give up the dust... :)

Then fire up the time machine because they haven't made Dexron B since 1972. And no, not every Dexron variant is backwards compatible. Walmart Type F is fine for me.

Montclaire’s comment is precisely what I was getting at. I don’t care what your or anyone else’s owners manual says about what fluid to use. If you are doing a new build it won’t matter what fluid you start with, the band and clutch technology isn’t dependent on you using 50 year old fluid technology. A new build will have clutches compatible with today’s fluids.

Type F works fine for 727 and 904`s , and it`s CHEAPER PEOPLE !
