Having trouble dialing in a 1968 dodge coronet 500 i bought out of state it has a 383 h code moter
I changed plugs and wires checked time it was 50° advanced set time now it overheats and backfired through exhaust and when you put it in drive it stalls. Also it has an electric fuel pump and a mechanical pump both look new and my gauge shows 12 lbs of pressure electric pump says its 4.4 to 7 lbs. any help would be appreciated thanks in advance
 
You need to back that timing down big time, iron or aluminum heads? Stock motor, 87 pump gas?
 
Did you disconnect and plug vacuum line on the distributor before setting timing?

If it's a stock engine, why the need for both types of fuel pumps?
If you're running a carburetor, 12psi is WAY too much pressure.
4-6 is more like it; max of 7 psi.
More than that and on a street carb, you'll be forcing fuel past the needle/seat in the bowls.
Basically drowning the poor thing. Fouling plugs, all that jazz.
 
Maybe start at the beginning. Verify the timing mark on the balancer with a positive stop tool. You can make one from an old spark plug, but sometimes getting the porcelain out is a pain. A compression test is next.

You are checking the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected?

Yea not sure why they did that ill probably disconnect electric pump and see what happens
 
From a guy that never had a timing light for a long long time this is how i dialed in timing.
Loosen distributor enough to turn it. Have someone start the car and put it in gear while holding the brake. Turn the distributor til the engine runs the best. Mark with a pencil. Now shut off the engine. Try cranking again. It will crank hard. Turn distributor til i cranks easy. Make a mark. Now set the distributor between the 2 marks and start test driving and adjust little by little to dial it in by seat of the pants feel.
