Just wondering if anyone has experienced "hot start" problems with Edelbrock carbs? Subject car is a '69 Charger with a 383 and stock intake, no carb spacer. Engine cold starts fine, drives excellent. Issue is that after car is driven a few miles and shut off, it is hard to re start and the only way to get it to fire is to hold the gas pedal to the floor as in clearing a flood. Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

any carb can have a "heat" issue with todays gas; especially winter blend. there are several scenarios that contribute to this but a first step is to control heat to the carb. an insulator gasket is a good place to start. no carb is immune to this.

A valley pan with a heat block off might be a good idea.
I ran a Carter on my Charger for years, never had that problem really.
Perhaps just a little on a really hot day.
Do you have really high temperatures under the hood?
Original gear reduction starter, does it crank slower when hot? (A newer one from a Dakota or a mini starter really helps flip it over quicker)

Characteristic of all Carbs. No cure. Spacer, wrapped lined etc may help. Ethanol boils at around 173.

I have a Street Demon with the polymer bowl and it starts much easier when hot than my Eddies.
An electric fuel pump will make a difference for you.

Yes try and run Ethanol free if possible (for a number of reasons).
This used to work well for me when expecting a hard hot start:
1. Depress accelerator slowly to about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way down.
Try and avoid a pump shot hold it there.
2. Try cranking, no more than about 5-6 seconds at a time.

I run a spacer from Summit under my AVS and no hot start issues to speak of.
I do buy ethanol-free whenever possible, too.
Funny thing is, I got out of the car the other day after a drive and heard what sounded like something leaking.
Traced it to the back of the car and found I could hear the fuel returning to the tank!
Now there's something I never heard before...

All good advice above. My Eddy and cast iron intake boiled fuel in the summer. I swapped them for a Holley and an aluminum intake with the heat crossover blocked with the valley pan and added a return line to solve the problem. I also used DEI heat shield on the fuel line from pump to carb.

When all else fails run a fuel filter with a return line to the tank.

Loved my 850 Demon. MuuuuuuuWaaaaaa. The cure for hot restarts? EFI.

Reason: Todays ethanol laced fuel.

You are probably right, Dennis. I don't remember people complaining about having hot start issues with any carburated cars until I started getting back into the hobby in 2011. I'm sure it started much sooner, though.

Does anyone know when they started switching the pumps to ethanol only?

Update: Apparently, it was 2005 and by 2011 it was widespread and hard, if not impossible, to find 100% pure gas.
