The pilot was Lt. Bob Cosgrove, my father. The plane was damaged and difficult to fly but he got it back to the Essex. Deen, the gunner, was decapitated. I've spoken to Bob Montague, the photographer, before and am happy to find out he is still alive. My father in the course of the war got the Navy Cross, 3 DFCs and 8 Air Medals. He died in 2005 and is buried at Arlington.

I've seen this before. I think it was on YOUTube as part of a 1950's "Victory at Sea" episode. Quite moving. All of them were truly "The Greatest Generation". I mourn their passing, especially when I see what has become of today's society. Some of them were my school teachers in the late 70's and early 80's.
