I've requested a similar opinion from the forum months ago.

My 66 Coronet 500 has the 361 with a factory 4 speed, these all came with the 2bbl Carter. My motor has been completely and professionally rebuilt, I tackled rebuilding this most un-popular carb and vowed that it would run as Dodge had intended before any upgrade would happen.

Done and done,

I'm NOT a HP junkie. Don't need to burn rubber or drag race at my age. I DO want to feel some HP at the gas pedal.

I found a year correct 383 manifold ( yes, this must be part of the change), now the question is : What to put on it?

I'm ready to buy. Brand, CFM, options

Your opinions are appreciated

Ma Mopar used Carter AFB's back then. They were small CFM's maybe 625. 600 is plenty for a 361 with a 2 bbl camshaft. For me the smaller CFM's work best for a street driven car giving good throttle response.I ran a 500 AFB on a 451 inch engine, stick shift on the street. Even now I only have a 750 AFB on my 472 Hemi car. My 2 cents.

Edelbrock AVS will be tempting.. but there are lots of complaints about these carbs. If you want something period correct they are as close as you will get. unless you can find a rebuilt carter.

This is the one that I found but its for a 67 its a Carter and a 383 4309

If you want to look here are a couple dated lists of carbs and applications for plymouth and other cars.

Appreciated...but when the engine was built, the 4bbl carb was considered when choosing the cam. I had a stock Carter ( 600 I believe) on a 69 340 Dart, that I could never improve on.

While I want the manifold to be "true", I don't have the same connection to the carb. Modern carbs do much better than their ancestors that ran with leaded gas. I've left the "poly-glass" tires behind too.

So: What is a 2019 answer to the situation.

We used a Quick Fuel Carb on our 340 Duster, and have been real happy with it. Runs great, year after year, with no real tuning, after the Dyno set up...

One other thing to consider is that the 66 intake would have the small bolt pattern for the carb, which would rule out a holley, unless an adapter is used.

MuuuuuuuWaaaaaaahhhh. Gonna love it. The sound alone is worth the trip.

Small bolt pattern?? even on a big block??

Yes. The carb bolt pattern changed to the holley square bore pattern in 68, for the 383 and 67 for the 440. Aftermarket carter type carbs usually have both patterns except the TQ which has the small pattern.

Myself I would go with the edelbrock performer #1406 600 cfm.
I ran one for years on my stock 383, plugs burned nice and once the air/fuel adjustments were done It held its tune for years.
Replaced the accelerator pump once in 5yrs.
any new carb make sure to check the float settings and choke settings, plus setting the air /fuel idle mix.

Check out Summit Racing for a Street Demon 1901 (IIRC)
625cfm electric choke, dual bolt pattern, it's like $320
"should fit", should run great, fit under a stock type air-cleaner etc.

if you need one with a mechanical or stove pot style choke
I think they have them too

I have a buddy that used one for his pretty much bone stock 383 4bbl
very mild cam, a little hotter CEI electronic ignition, HP cast iron manifolds
a 2-1/4 dual exhaust, really worked great right out of the box
snappy throttle response too

may have to modify
or use your throttle cable connections/connector
off the 2bbl
or get a 4bbl style cable bracket off a 4bbl equipped car too

good luck
