Bodies found in missing couple looking for 66 Mustang

I had my own slightly creepy CL experience. I called on a bunch of really good sheet metal tools (Rotex punch, a press brake, etc,) in the central valley and said I couldn't get there right away to look at them but was interested in more than one tool. My interest must have got his interest because of the dollar amount. The Rotex alone is $1000.00 all day long if you can find a good one. The guy said he had a few people interested in the Rotex and at that point I said if they show up and it's gone so be it. He immediately changed his tune and said he would hold everything for me and tell the others it was sold and he had a few friends to help load the stuff. I mentioned this to a buddy and he got a really concerned look on his face when I told him these were in Madera. At that point I had visions of showing up with lots of cash and getting rolled by a bunch of gang bangers. So to recap, a few key points about this potential deal that didn't sit well with me:

*Big money transaction peaked sellers interest.
*Sellers willingness to accommodate me even without a deposit or contract.
*Pics of all items posted in the ad were in a shop environment BUT the guy said he has them in his garage now. He told me he got them at an auction and needs to get them out of his garage.

This all might have been legit but I didn't feel like finding out without a few of my well armed FBBO buddies to back me up!!!!
 
Somebody at my work led me on to this story, he knew that I go out and buy cars on Craigslist. Made me think of one deal I had to skip on in West Virginia when the guy started to act a little weird. When things don't add up, I never take the chance of getting hurt by a "seller". Same goes when selling, I always have the buyer show upon weekend when other people are around to deal with.
 
On anything I go to look at off CL or any other ad source, I bring one of my two sons with me. We go armed. And cash-free. I tell my wife where we are going and the address that we are going to. We call when we get there, and when we leave. If I decide to purchase the vehicle (or engine, or whatever), I know where the closest bank is that I can use and get the money then.

It's truly a shame that crap has come to this, these days.

I've had that sales tactic used on me, too (There are "lots of calls" on this and you need to act quickly!), and my response is the same as yours (Well, if you sell it before I can look at it, that is the way it goes! There are other [whatevers] out there!)
 
Very sad. You should be able to trust people, but you can't. There's all kinds of ways to protect yourself in these kinds of transactions. Read Craigslist's safety suggestions and then take it several steps farther. Don't go alone, don't carry big gobs of cash, meet in a public place (like the parking lot of a police station) and if the buyer/seller doesn't agree to do this, forget it. If a deal doesn't smell right, it probably isn't.
 
^^^You know, funny you mentioning meeting at a police station to make a transaction...Today, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department announced that if a person wanted to meet another at any of the SO's substations around the county, or at the County Jail, to make a sale of property that people are more than welcome to do so. That is really a good idea, actually! If the item is small enough to be carried, or is a vehicle, then neither the seller nor the buyer should have any qualms at all about a meeting at a sheriff's office/substation. That weeds out the fakes, whackos, and crooks real quick!
 
I live in Georgia and it is sad, unfortunately it happens too often. Last case a guy was selling a ps3. He got shot and killed. I actually bought my 68 roadrunner from a guy off craigslist last year. Best thing to do is not carry cash on you, meet in a public place preferably near a police station
 
Hate to see that kind of stuff. When I last went to see Bruce Cliché he had a loaded .45 on the corner of a stack of firewood were he came out to see who I was.

safety tips
It could use a paint job, needs carpet and the carb needs cleaning or changed. When you drive it and you stop you have to press the gas while you hold the brake to keep it from going dead. The front driver seat needs stitching at the seam and so does the back. These wheels do NOT go with it . It will have the orginal hub caps and the pirate tag does not go with it. We have owned this car since 1984 as young married couple we drove it and then started having kids and it was retired away in our garage. This is NOT one of those cars put together by differnt parts of other cars and full of bondo. It is a solid orginal car with pony seats. Now this is how it works $26,000 firm because if we don't sale it ,we will let it sit another 30 years and let our kids sell it when we die. I have tons of pictures I can send you. If you are wanting to see it let me know we will drive it to the sheriff's dept in Waleska only you will NOT come to our house. If you want to buy it then you will follow us to the bank in Canton Ga to give me cash inside the bank and I will the buy a cashiers check. This is the ONLY way it will go down, Due to all the stupid people in the world that are killers and theives. It is 289 automatic. Oh I will update this later with vin and milage. the motor is good strong motor. No worries there. all the tag taxes has been paid but will need a tag in March 25.00 bucks in canton ga.

Any deals I go to, now have myself and a friend...and we're heavily armed. I do it the middle of an open business/busy parking lot, during daylight hours and within camera range.
 
1999....Harry Christensen, owner of Advantage Boats was a Pilot & had just bought a Ted Smith Aerostar to replace His Cessna 340, which i had worked on in past. So the 340 went up for sale. Harry gets a call & goes out to Havasu City airport to meet interested party bobby joe keesee. Nobody hears back from Harry. Some time later Harry's decomposed body was found by a Farmer on a roadside in New Mexico.
Harry is Missed,,,,a solid Family Man and staunch, involved supporter of His Havasu community. RIP Harry
The piece of **** bobby joe keesee is serving two life sentences, one for murder & the other for air piracy involving death. Sadly this pos is a Viet Nam war hero.
 
These stories aren't uncommon. I've never bought anything off of Craigslist but I've heard many times to only conduct the transaction or meeting in a very public place in the daytime in the open. If this isn't possible then take somebody with you as back-up. And, if you can, go armed.
 
i usually give them the post office address to meet me at when they ask for an addy.
then,not only do i get a chance to scope them out before i take them to my property,
but i also have a camera vid of them meeting me in the lot.
 
That article is over 4 Years old! How does this relate to current events? It doesn't!

I read the link. it says that the POS will be re-indicted. Sounds like the accused got off on a technicality, hopefully next time the DA wont make anymore mistakes and prosecute this guy
