Wondering....so looks like a great piece to assemble and push an engine and tranny around. Once you insert it into (under) the car whats next? Cant put the k frame bolts in so what, secure the tranny, and put a jack under the k frame and try and remove the stand before inserting the k frame bolts?

I have an aluminum, rectangular platform I made. It's all 90-degree angle material, with casters. It's also less than 2-feet wide. I've transported and installed 4 engine/trans/front suspension assemblies with it. It only sits about 4-6" off the floor. I store drive-trains on it, as well. I found the material in a friend's dumpster....from a commercial display. A little cutting, drilling, bolting....and VIOLA!!

They go on the front frame sections of the uni body.
They are not in the way.

makes sense ish for lifting up the body, but what is holding up the k-frame/engine/tranny at that point?

Not sure what you're missing rakort, the K frame bolts are NO WHERE near the hoist points for the frame rails. K frame, engine and trans are all sitting on my $10 roller made out of scrap silent beams. Roll in place, lower car and put in the 4 K frame bolts and trans cross member bolts. Lift everything back up...

thanks, and nice looking project!

well my question goes back to my original post wondering about the usefulness of the roller k-frame / engine / tranny stand?

I'm thinking that stand isn't useful and just trying to confirm that

That one is for show, that's for sure. Great locator pins, but as you noted you have to use a jack to lift it off the jig which makes it pretty stupid!

He wants to know how you get the bolts in for the K Frame if you use that stand he pictured. Notice the pins that stick up through bolt holes. He’s trying to figure out how to transfer the assembly from the jig directly to the car.

we, me, you, and yalls on the same page now. thanks 69L for tuning up my question

Just need either the front or rear "K" frame (upright)supports. Then install either the two front or rear "K" frame bolts. Jack it up and then install the other two.

Looks similar to what I had made up around 18 years ago...except mine had 2 x uprights, and that meant that 2 x K-member bolts plus the transmission cross-member could be bolted up using the jacking method. Installed the other 2 x K-member bolts when on the ground.

I used that same 'tripod' cradle in conjunction with my buddy's two=post hoist a few years ago also. Works great....just a garden ornament right now. :D

It may or may not be a good idea depending on what other tools you have in your shop. You could probably make it work if you had a two post lift. If you don't have a two post lift then I don't think that particular cart will do much for you other than make a nice assembly bench and storage rack. Either the car has to move up and down or the engine and trans assembly has to move up and down. Something has to move in order to mate the two together.

I see what you're saying rakort. That is a nice piece but has some design flaws or either was never meant to use it to install the assembly under the car. The length of the pins means you'd have to jack the assembly up 3-4". I would buy some square tube, cut out the length of the pin with and 1 1/2-2" extra, drill some holes for a securing pin, then you could slide the assembly under car and lower the car to where it almost touches. Then you could pull your securing pin, let one of those legs with the locating pin drop down one at a time and you could put a k-frame bolt in. Does that all make sense ?

I made mine so it goes into the openings between the upper and lower halves which leaves the bolt hole open.

WOW CKessel, that looks GREAT. Can you please give me the measurements on the steel pieces. I would like to make one for my Big Block, 4 spd instal.

Thanks in advance,

B.

Its buried in my trailer right now. I'll see if I can get to it this weekend.
