California Exhaust

I have to ask myself and wonder how many bikers are going to get tagged with this and weather even they'll show up for it?

Yup I am stuck here in California, mulling over the new exhaust law that was passed in January. Apparently the state is really cracking down on loud exhaust systems and some folks are getting slapped with heavy fines and a lot of hassle.

I will be building (or buying) an exhaust system for my '68 B body before too long. I will run a 383 for a while until I can build a 500 inch stroker for it. My plan is to run 1 7/8 TTI headers and a 2 1/2 inch system after that (maybe an exhaust kit from Summit or Jegs). This will be street use only. I want a deep throaty sound, but definitely do not want to draw attention from the sound Nazis. And frankly I am not interested in irritating my neighbors or giving myself a resonance headache.

I know "what sounds good" is a very subjective issue, but I would appreciate any recommendations for a system - primarily a muffler - that might fit the bill.

Thanks!
I feel sorry for CA. This stuff is not new though. If you ordered a 'Cuda or R/T Challenger new in '70 in CA, you got turn-down's instead of through the Valance exhaust tips. Boy, that really saved the planet didn't it. Pypes sells a kit for the B-Body without mufflers, just take the advise of some previous posters and use the Dynomax Super Turbo's. Quiet at idle and cruise, no drone, but sounds great when you get on it. Can't imagine any Cop could site you with that system. https://classicmusclecarexhaust.com/c/quick-search/mopar/b-body/pypes

Just another example of the radical left in action, who’s in favor of a 49 star flag? LOL

Hooker Comp headers, 1.875" to 3" collectors. TTI 2.5" x-pipe, tailpipes with Dynomax superturbo mufflers, TTI chrome tips. On a 383 with a roller cam. It's loud (especially on startup), good tone when cursing down the street. I've driven it to work and late at night in residential and nightlife areas and never had a problem. Not all areas are the same. There's modern muscle foreign and domestic that are far worse when it comes to obnoxious noise.

Stock exhaust manifolds on my 440, then 2.5" straight pipes through Flowmaster Super 40s to oval exhaust tips. Nicely loud with a drone, but I like it for now. Driven past cops several times without problems. Oh, I can also press a button and electric cutouts will open up before the mufflers, and then it sounds like the world is coming to an end. Needless to say I don't open them up often.

Well guys I live in the heart of California and the older I get, the more discussed I become with the state. I have been building a 69 charger for the last 3 years and expect to put it on the road for first time in 25+ years next month. This is what I chose recently:

440
1.875 TTI Headers
3" with X TTI kit
Dynomax mufflers
Exhaust out the back with tips

I am thankful for my local Police, and I hope they will be watching for the real criminals and not my tail pipe noise.

I wonder if they will ticket an out of state vehicle. I am driving the '59 there this summer

Seriously doubt it. Especially given your tooling in a 59. This law is more designed for the rice rockets and very loud bikes. As others have said it’s unlikely cops will be ticketing those of us in the hobby cars. Short of having open headers I’m pretty sure you’ll be okay. As will most of us.
