Clear plastic fuel bowl site plugs...a warning....

Many of you will know this.
I left 3 clear site plugs in the fuel bowl sight holes longer than it took to check and adjust the float levels.
I won't make excuses, I knew I shouldn't leave them in "too long"...
Well any longer than it takes for the actual same day session to adjust the floats is going to be considered too long for me from now on.
They came apart and I had to take all 3 Holley 2bbl carbs off the intake, remove the fuel bowls, clean out the plastic particles, and put it all back together WITH the brass plugs.
D'OH!
 
Tomorrow is a 5am wakeup for the 2 hour drive to Mopars at the Battleship in Mobile, so it was do or dont...
What should have taken 20 minutes took 3 hours.
 
Setting the fuel levels with the regular bowl screws takes about 3 minutes and works flawlessly every time. Could never understand a need for something different.

I agree with you 110%. Unfortunately, my QuickFuel 850 came with the sight glasses molded into the fuel bowls so I am stuck with them in there. They are larger than the standard screw in type sight glass holes in a float bowl so I don't think I could remove them if I want to. Good news is I believe they are glass and not plastic.

I have ran into a lot of stripped threads on Holley fuel bowl sight plug holes and needle/seat,made new sight plugs one size larger,new insert for needle/seat to save the bowl,you clear sight plugs could possibly be replaced.

New style doesn't thread in...held in the hole with an E clip. I guess they work good, just a different design.

They are the style that quick fuel uses in their fuel bowls. The hole is bigger in the bowl compared to the little plug Holley uses.
 
My old Demon has the built-in sight glasses, I think BG started that on production carbs? Much better setup in my opinion. One less thing to screw with (lol) and you can always see the level and adjustments as they like the level at slightly different heights depending on usage. That said, I've never used the clear plugs on a Holley...so okay good to know..don't leave 'em in too long..
 
And from what I understand after a heated discussion with a A body guru, the Holley float adjustments are just at the bottom of the threads and the float adjustment for a Quickie is half way up the clear plug. Check the manual to be sure.

I bought those once for my holley carb, one of them snapped in pieces during installation.
It was not even tight yet, still had a bit to go to get it seated against the gasket.
Then i already realised these things are a danger, put a rag under the manifold when adjusting till it overflows.
Few minutes job and less risk of failing equipment causing a fuel spill while driving.
