I was doing a little research on when seat belts became mandatory equipment.

What I came up with was "the 1968 model year", but it's not clear what exactly was mandated.

I've never owned a 68, so my point of reference is earlier-
(none of my 66 or 67 cars have had shoulder belts)
or later-
(all of my 70 and up cars have had them)

It got me real curious about 1968

Good question, my 68 coronet 440 had them but my buddies 68 satellite doesn't even have the threaded holes in the roof .....

Federal mandated law that any car built after January 1st, 1968 had the shoulder belts and seat belts as standard equipment from the factory.

Care to post the source? I couldn't find a definition of "safety belt" that specifically included the shoulder belt.

Also, January is in the middle of the model year production run.

I do know 69 did have shoulder belts. (At least the 3 I have owned.) My 68 satellite did not. Nor my 66 GTO. But 68 Camero did. So this law had to come into effect during 68 production. Like mandatory head rests. My current 69 GTX does not. Nor did my 69 RR. But my first 69 GTX? Did have. I learned the "Head rest" law did come in during middle of production dates in 69. So yes. It happened frequently back in the day. New rules in the middle of production dates. They are better at timing these days.

Same type of deal, the headrest became mandatory in January of 69 as per federal law, prior to that, it was an option.

The federal mandates all seem to start Jan 1st. Seat belts mandatory 1/1/64 4 way flashers 1/1/66 etc. Had a 68 Dart with shoulder belts,

Mine built after 1/1/68, has shoulder belts.

That's the kind of info I'm looking for.

Thanks.

And the elastic isn’t working anymore, lol.

Wow.

That suggests the factory waited until the last possible moment to comply.

My previous car, a 68, had factory front and rear shoulder belts.

Rear shoulder belts in 68?????

My 68 Charger has a SPD of 1/22/68. Mine came with the shoulder belts and the elastics are all stretched out as well, LOL!

My 68 GTX does not have shoulder belts but has the head rests which I believe were an option on the car.

My '68 Coronet Deluxe produced in January of 1968 has shoulder belts.
