Hey guys, what kind of black is painted on the metal part of the dash, is it gloss, flat, textured etc?

It is a laquer smooth suede finish from factory to reduce reflection from light into the drivers eyes. Pretty close to a satin finish now adays. It has a bit less gloss than a satin finish.

Thanks! Can you buy this stuff?

Depends on how picky you are but yes, just about every hardware store or paint supplier will carry it in spray cans. SEM is one of the better brands but has to be bought at a paint supply store. I'd buy a can of flat black and a can of satin black and see which looks better. I used SEM's Hot Rod black on mine but you have to mix it and of coarse have a gun but in my case I didn't care about correctness.

Its just a driver, not picky at all. Thanks for the info!

Depends how accurate you want it to be. The ‘real’ stuff is PPG Duracryl lacquer and is not made anymore. There is one vendor who sells it by the pint in black for $200, colors are $250.

If you don’t want to go that route, there are some spray cans that get reasonably close. Doing it on the cheap? Try Krylon flat black though it replicates the sheen more than the texture. Many have also had success with SEM trim black. None of them are the same as the OE paint though.

As I have mentioned many times, the original duracryl paint from Instrument specialties does have micro metal flake in it like it did from the factory, so flat or satin or other off the shelf paint won't match. And the texture is achieved how quickly the lacquer paint dries, so you really need to know how to properly spray lacquer paint to achieve the proper texture.

I figure if I am at a cruise night, and someone is judging the texture of my dash, they probably drove to the cruise night in a prius parked around the corner hahaha! I am all for factory resto stuff on those types of cars, but man I get too much bug guts on my **** to worry about that stuff.

I'm not looking for factory correct just something close, its going to be a driver,

Powdercoat it and be done with it.......since it is a driver.....

The only people that will notice the dash having texture or not are the die hard originality folks........

Must have wiped the "texture" out of mine over the years, because it had none when I blasted it clean. Duplicolor Trim 70000 I believe it was that I used. Spray from a distance to give it some profile..

Here's the primer & texture paint I used. Dave recommends it in his instructions for doing the dash & like painted parts.
The primer has good solids in it and I cave it about 3 coats. Then used some fine 3m scotchbrite to scuff it up before applying the texture paint.
The texture paint is a little tricky, you need lots of good lighting to ensure even coverage. I applied 2 coats of texture. I'll give it 48 hours to cure before painting with the blue.
The rotisserie sure made painting nice and will help while assembling.

If you use a paint gun and enamel with flatner, and spray over the above base it will turn out very nice.

Here is a picture of the texture on dash, it's very fine, almost like you sprayed it a little dry.
