I am chasing a leak in my transmission and want to replace the dipstick seal. I found a short video on the seal replacement, but nothing on removing the dipstick. From the look of the end of the dipstick tube in the video, it appears that the tub just pushes into the trans. Is that correct. A search of forums and perusal of the service manual didn't provide any insight.

Yep it just pushes in. The grommet is easy to find, I got one from the local O'Reilly's and I think it was actually a GM part (just a generic dorman piece). I use a light smear of silicone outside of the grommet and on the tube for extra insurance...

My 66 trans dipstick tube has a has a tab that bolts to trans.

On my '62 the tube has a tab at the bell housing plus a tab at the trans to unbolt. Maybe the one at the trans was eliminated on the newer models.

My 67 727 does not have the tube tab at the bottom.
Any rate, that how much of the later ones are, just the mounting tab at the engine/trans bolt. Depending on what year, like the ones pictured, takes an o-ring seal in the groove, later uses a slip in type rubber boot.

Beware! Have seen some get too rough trying to pull the o-ring type tube, and breaking it at the groove, from the o-ring getting hard and sticking.

Sorry for providing incomplete/wrong info. Never even considered that it might be an early model 727 trans.
