I was at one of my favorite honey hole thrift stores and I see this guy looking at some small speakers.

As I get closer he puts one of the pair into his cart.

I pick up the other one, and it's heavy.

Looks like about a 4" mid and a nice dome tweeter.

It's got binding posts!

I say- "kind of a shame to separate a matched pair"

The guy says "that one's missing the grill, and they want $3 each"

As I turn it around and gently bounce the cone, I see the brand name- Klipsch!

"A missing grille doesn't make it sound bad" I say.

The guy just shrugs and walks off.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to own decent audio equipment.

Go buy your coby, gpx, late model emerson, etc and leave the good stuff alone...for those of us with fully functioning brains!

I would've offered him $5 for the one he took right then and there, and happily paid $8 for the pair.

I have seen the same thing happen where someone only buys one studio monitor and it makes me think....

Since I'm not an audiophile was it the brand or the weight that gave the quality away? Any other brands I should look for? I love my local Goodwill.

Both. Klipsch is top of he line. Old JBL and a few others from the pre digital age are top notch. Heavy generally means a heavy speaker magnet and/or heavy cabinet. Both are a good thing.

Castle, Celestion, B&W, Kef, Wharfedale. I adore the Castle Kendal II's that I was able to snag on the cheap. Also had no grilles...but I made a set. I'm partial to the un-imposing gear. I'd only replace the Castle's with B&W, for what it's worth.

I've still got my Kenwood Trip-8's [5-way], from back in the 70's. They thunder

Did ya try and talk him out of the one he had?

NO. I could tell there was no reasoning with that one.

There was a single Magnavox speaker of about the same size on the shelf that he apparently wasn't interested in.

My last speaker purchase from that store was a pair of Boston Acoustics 6.5 bookshelf that sound like 12".

I read a review that called it a draw between those and the comparable Klipsch model.
MSRP over $200.

$5 for the pair.

That store is close to where I work and I try to get there at least once a week.

Went to an auction near me today and bought a pair of Altec 872A's. The cabinets are nice and they have the bi-flex speakers. They were $25. I could have made the auctioneer back up and bought them cheaper, but $25 is a runaway and sometimes one saves money by paying a little more, discouraging the competition.
Hope they work.

My shop speakers are a set of JBL L-100 studio monitors from the late 70s.
Still crankin out the tunes, the dark brown foam square front covers have turned to dust .

This will restore your faith. I just picked up these Yamaha NS-A8 speakers for $5. The pegs were busted off the grills and I knew at least one tweeter was bad. So, I found a similar set of tweeters, installed with the addition of a capacitor to filter out some mids and get them close to the original sound, fixed the grills and now using them in my music studio. These things are built very well, with a full coil crossover, heavy insulation, and solid woofers they can handle up to 225 watts, and they sound amazing, with nice crisp highs and very punchy lows.

The fist shame is that someone sent a set of Klipsh to the thrift shop. Smh.
