Totally dry fill for 727

Going to be starting a fresh engine and fresh transmission at the same time. Don’t want to have to do 10 things all at once when it first lights off...
-Fresh rebuilt 727 with little more then a pint of assembly drippings in it.
-New reman (shipped dry) 10.75” converter from Patty (his instructions say to dump 1 quart into converter)
-New/dry cooler lines
-New/dry aluminum radiator.

I’m thinking 1 quart in the converter and 6 into the transmission.
Do you think that will keep me safe while breaking in the cam/ setting timing / etc?

Also, I can get TypeF easily and cheaply, and I wouldn’t mind firm shifts because I did not have a shift kit installed. Type F sound good?
 
Make sure the trans is in neutral, not park when you start it. The oil does not circulate in park. There are a lot of things going on, with a new start and it is easy to overlook things.
 
What size is the converter and are you running a stock pan? The larger the converter, the more it'll hold. The 727 will hold 5 or so and a 10" converter can hold 3. If you can get the stuff cheap, why not put more in there. Heck, a 7" converter will hold at least 2. It's not that hard to drain some if you end up being over full....
 
Pour at least a qt. in the converter, fill the transmission past the full line on the dipstick ( approx.+ 1/2 qt.). get all your equipment together ( timing light, vacuum gages, etc.) and fire it up. Once you have it running stable go back and check the level and add accordingly. Like R/T Boy said "make sure it's in neutral" and you should be good to go ahead and bring up your RPM's (around 1500-1800 for about 20 minutes) for your cam to break in. Most importantly be sure to have cold beer on hand so you don't jinx it... works for me
 
It’ll take damn near 10 qts. to fill it when dry.
 
If you try to fill the transmission to its maximum full capacity of 9-10 quarts it will run out the breather.

Pour six quarts in the trans and leave a funnel in the dipstick tube, start the engine with the shifter in neutral and immediately pour in another two quarts. After break-in adjust the fluid level.
 
I always went by 9 quarts total. Factory service manual says 18.5 pints 727.So totally dry looks like 10 quarts.
 
New tranny,one qt in converter, 7 in tranny(Valvoline Dextron / Mercon) if I remember correctly my tranny guy has me add a qt of motor oil to the fill.never had a problem.rear up on jack stands wheels off the ground car in neutral,after car has been running foot on break and run the shifter through the gears up and down to make sure fluid has reached all passages in the valvebody .... check fluid level.

Have a helper do this the second it starts. Have the quarts needed sitting right there, ready to go in. If there is any delay, there is a chance of the pressure side getting sucked dry. AMHIK
 
My trans guy agreed with all above.

Qt in the converter, couple of qts in the pan, start in neutral and add slowly. He said add it all too quick and you run the risk of blowing out the front seal.
 
My 904 took just over 10 qts!
