Mike Rowe gets it, and eloquently conveys it.

Thank you for that sir. Spot on and totally true! I am surprised it was on a major network!
:thankyou:

Browsing through youtube found several interviews with him. Always liked the guy, and listening to him its not put on. Man is a fountain information of things most on here think but dont always know how to put into words. Man o man he sure does know how to get it across.

He used to make little comments on his show just enough to let you know who's side he was on. I always liked the guy.

I believe I heard something about him singing opera at one time?

Seems like he relates to the working blue collar person. Nothing wrong with serving a apprenticeship and becoming a journeyman.
Nothing wrong with going to college, studying your *** off and becoming a C.P.A.
There all skills and we still need em

Wow, I thought (obviously incorrectly) that Mike Rowe is a well known household entity in this country, but from the looks of this thread so far, maybe not?

His "Dirty Jobs" and "Somebody's Gotta Do It" tv shows on cable have run for decades now, after all - but beyond that is his charitable foundation, https://www.mikeroweworks.org/ , that does awesome things for young folks while trying to help fill the skills gap in this country.

Our public education system has chanted the same old mantra at high schoolers approaching graduation for decades now - kids being told a college education is the ONLY way they'll amount to anything, leaving millions of them outside the box if they either don't want to go to college or circumstances keep them from it.
It's the single greatest disservice we do to our youth these days, this lie the schools tell them....
It leads to the $Billions in college debt everyone is so damn concerned about, the millions of college grads who can't find work in their chosen discipline (and ever-rising numbers of them moving back in with mama after college) and the millions of unfilled jobs going wanting in the skilled trades in our society, leading to all sorts of problems there, too.

Well, Mike Rowe Works does what it can to help bridge that gap, leading to all sorts of wonderful things happening.
You'd think that would be enough for Mike, but noooo….. he also has his voice-over work for those "deadliest catch" tv shows, his own "Somebody's Gotta Do It" show and probably even more impressively, his Facebook show called "Returning the Favor", which I watch religiously.
Every damn episode of that show leaves me in tears, every single one.
The man is doing God's work on that show, simply put. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

His parents are even blessings and everyone gets a kick out of them, too.
Yes, I believe Mike is a national treasure. He does from his heart things our own government SHOULD be doing.
I wish we could clone him.

Yep, he's got an incredible baritone voice and has done that gig.
Amusingly, got his start on TV as a late night host on QVC, where he pioneered that free-form method of hawking products where most of his shift was spent talking to folks who called in to the show, something those type networks do to this day.

As a teacher in a public school system I couldn’t agree more. When Mike was talking about specifying vs generalizing in the working world, public schools have definitely pushed the college route. Heck it was happening when I was there a long time ago. But I also think public education systems doubled down on this “mantra”. With all the Stem programs, advanced placement classes, which by the way at the end of the year a student will pay for a test and if they pass it, they earn college credits while still in high school.

You ask where the hell am I going with this, here’s the rub, high school students need to be kids and adolescents and have time to do the things in and around these years to learn and mature and have fun. With all these programs and pressures, they are not! It’s killing our other programs lol Ken athletics because there isn’t time to practice and correctly devote yourself to sport(s). That’s just 1 area.

I saw and interview the other day that stated teen suicide is up over 50% since 2002! I got to thinking what happened in and around that time? 2001 No child left behind program. Coincidence? I think not. That is where all this pressure started to go get extra programs in school. Now where kids were trying to get into these stem programs, ap courses and different academies to earn college credits, the pressure was and is unbelievable! The adolescent brain, which is still developing until mid 20’s, is not match for that pressure of life at that time! There will be a boiling over point and I hope we can get back to a better was of doing public education for our kids and grandkids. They deserve a chance to be kids and better.

Rant over, thanks!
Go Mike Rowe!

I will also mention my daughter who attends the school I teach, is graduating. She did not enter any stem programs, only a couple of ap classes because she needed to. The lower level classes she had already taken. But the best thing she attended United Technology Center for2 years in Autobody refinishing and painting. This year she earned Gold at SkillsUSA competition and is off to Kentucky for the Nationals! A trade girl! Already working for a premiere auto body shop here in town first as intern and then part time with plans to send her to college and hire full time when she’s done! No college debt! Can’t beat that except military!

Mike seems to understand the dynamics of the complete situation. Not everyone can go or want to go to college, not everyone can or will go to trade schools. But somewhere down this line the collar wars came together blue vs white collar. In reality it takes both. For some reason fast talking better then you types seem to reside in the white collar camp in my experience. Dividing it further is the offshoring of jobs.

For many years I was on a Technical committee supporting one of the competitions at Skills USA National Championships. We designed the project and solicited donations of materials for the Teamworks competition. It was great fun and an awesome platform for employers as well as a HUGE confidence booster for the kids. Mike Rowe supports Skills USA by providing scholarships to students who have won the honor to compete at the NATIONAL level.
Once the federal gov't started backing student loans the ENTIRE college system in the US went to ****. They would take anyone who had money and lessened entry requirements in stupid ways just to "cash in". I could go on and on with a rant about our education system but that is fodder for another thread. Mike Rowe Rocks!!

That is awesome! You must be so proud of her. Congrats to her for applying herself.
We have simply got to remove the stigma that says if a kid chooses the trades versus the college route, that somehow they're inferior to other kids. That crap has GOT to stop!
Re-introduce shop classes to high schools, re-invigorate school-trade relationships, ENCOURAGE those who like working with their hands and have a work ethic in them.
Ok, I'm sounding just like Mike Rowe, I'll stop now...

older interview, back in Dec. 2016 IIRC,
right after Trump defeated Hillary
thank goodness :praying:

I'm surprised it was on Nothing But Commies network...
They were actually even civil to him...
Let alone them, letting Mike tell it like it is...
Utterly shocked...

Mikes great, he never admits he's a conservative minded person
even when asked directly, he avoids the answer to his own politics...

He's a great articulate spokesman for the working stiff...

It is clear to me the reason that Children are force fed the false mantra that "College is essential to getting a good job".
The indoctrination continues past High School.

If you like Mike you should check out Returning the Favor on Facebook. It’s a series where he supports people doing good in their communities.

The high school I went to has a vocational education department. Welding, machine shop, autobody, auto mechanics, agricultural and house building. They were and still are the reason that school has a student body of 1200 consistently in a town with a population of around 900.
