wow seals there driveway and what is the best to use.oil base, coal tar, geting quotes first 1 says oil base is the best but who do you trust.

Youtube videos. How do the pros do it? I would guess a LP Rosebud to heat and some kind of pounder to pack material into the cracks.

I did a lot of research before having my new driveway sealed. Coal Tar was my choice. It seamed the most durable and impervious to gas & oil.

The petroleum based is the best, but in our area it has been getting harder to get every year!
Just remember that asphalt gets on everything and transfers to vinyl flooring and carpet fibers
so once you go down that road, there's no going back. You have to drop the shoes every time
you hit the door, otherwise it'll get on everything! Everyone uses it because it's a lot cheaper
than concrete, but it has it's demons.

OK, coal tar is the best ,last the longest ,smells when first put down [48 hours or so] will dry at night , protects against oil,anti-freeze ect but nothing stops hydrolic fluid. It is the preferred sealer for commercial properties. Asphalt based used mostly for residential . It is blacker, doesn't smell, doesn't last as long [ i don't care what they tell you] ,will not dry at night without additives. Personally i use asphalt based on my own home because it is blacker and doesn't last ,sounds funny to say, right?.. The thing with sealer is you only want it to last about 3 years or so because it all fades out and you actually want it to wear away as it fades. The rubberized crap people get from home depot fades fast but doesn't wear away so they naturally put another coat on the next year to make it look good again. If it builds up on the surface it cracks due to being too thick and starts to look like alligator skin. Never do it more than every 3 years to avoid this.I tell you all this based on the fact that i'm a retired asphalt paving / milling contractor who started out a commerical sealcoating contractor. We have put down several million gallons of sealer in Nj/ Pa over the years. And yeah, my own needs it ,lol. BYW don't bother with oil based it's illegal to used in most places [ they still do] it's shiny [ why ? new asphalt isn't shiny] and doesn't last at all. It's the choice of "Gypsies" or "door knockers".

Thanks Dan64,coal tar does it get on shoes,i wear my shoes in the house,my fear it will transfer on to our flooring.

It should not track if you give it 24-36 hours to set up. Coal tar was blamed a lot for tracking on commercial jobs but most often it was the crack filler that was doing the tracking. Some low buck contractors would use roofing products instead of the proper asphalt maintenance products in their crack banding melters. They did this because it was cheaper ,melted faster and easier to get. The re-melt temp of roofing is much lower than the right stuff causing tracking on a warm or hot day.

The coal tar atoms are so small, they penetrate Everything! Not a believer? look at the Pic of my
main bathroom floor on either side of my toilet. Guests come over and hell, you can't tell them all
to take their shoes off. Can you? Well, We didn't. After 15 years it's time to change the flooring!

^^^ I would love to know what brand or how they are mixing that sealer to do that. We only would use Neyra "Tarconite". They only time we would possibly see any tracking would be if it was very humid and someone opened up a lot before 24 hours. You need a different sealcoater!.[ and floor]lol.

I have never had coal tar sealer track into my house. I've had 2 applications, a year apart on a new driveway.
