New project

The original house was an unlivable neglected wreck and there was absolutely nothing worth salvaging from that dump. Late last year, we did have the local fire department do some practice work on it; chopping holes in the roof and smashing walls before it was demolished.

We looked into it, but the entire floor structure was rotted and bug eaten. In reality, there were only a few halfway decent beams on the upper level. We looked into barn salvagers, but the problem is that they would have to take the structure apart piece by piece to get at the few good pieces of wood. The kicker is that they would charge us to take it down and it would take weeks for them to take it down whereas the excavator did the job in two hours. We have salvaged a bunch of granite posts and sill pieces from the barn and we will use at least 4 of them at the entrances of the two driveways (circular driveway). You can two granite posts below...

Sounds like you checked it out pretty thoroughly...always wondered about those shows on TV. I guess nothing is free, and the downside is usually the time taken and the inconvenience.
Props to you for offering the Fire Brigade some much needed training on the old house.

Now Mark has room for a C-body!

Everything looks very nice.

F the historical society. Those **** for brains held up a 500+ unit development I was doing because of the valuable history that was a post war duplex.

Then when that ran its course, they claimed the shells they found outback were a rare marine deposit. After Rutgers analyzed it (on our dollar), turns out the renters of that **** box liked clams and oysters but didn’t like cleaning up after themselves.

My advice is not to **** with them. Since they don’t have real jobs, they have all the time in the world to delay you. And they work hand in hand (fist in a$$) with the state environmental agencies. I’d stay clear.

And I hear ya on those barn salvagers. Never enough time to deal with them. Toss it all in the dumpster.

That will be sweeeeeet! Do yourself a favor, and workout a way to do an eyebrow (unibrow lol) like you have on the house, and make it stick out enough so you can leave the doors open and not get wet in there when theres a mild rain. My overhangs about three feet, the big vehicles fit under it and I don't have to worry about anything short of a gale force wind in mild temps. My 2 cents.

We thought about that, but we passed. We drew it out on paper & because of the roofline, we didn't like it. If the roofline over the garage (and the side of the house) had the gable above, it would have looked much better.

man,you are loaded for bear as far as money and ambition.
Great looking place, and really nice that it isnt that far away from your old place.

ps,i know the pain of dealing with as you so eloquently put it,
" the Hysterical commission".LOL

Ambition yes, but we aint got that kind of scratch to finish this place without seeing the man at the bank.

In the grand scheme of things, dealing with them wasn't as bad as it could have been. They just cost me months of time and an additional $400.00 for the structural engineer's report, which is nothing compared what you went through.

All of these government agencies do is slow you down and cost you money. As bad as it is on a local level, dealing higher up with county, state & federal has got to be tremendously worse the higher up one goes.

I have a fire hydrant right across the street and I was hoping that they'd burn it down. Unfortunately, due to liability, they can't do controlled house burns any longer. Too bad because scooping ashes out of the foundation hole would have been a lot cheaper than the 7 40-yard dumpsters they loaded it all into.

No close neighbors this time?

Oh, and when you put in the RV pad for your close FBBO pals, remember to install 50 amp, CATV,
and sewer hookups.
You do accept pets yes?
:D

My shop is 52' long and wish it was at least 60! 3 E body cars would be ok at 52 but just about everything else is longer....

New place looks great, congrats! Bummer that the other house didn’t work out, with all the time and energy you invested. But good that you decided quickly to find the right solution.

Good luck with the rest of the build! Layout looks very nice. Love the side entry garage too.

Doesn't matter what you do, or how big you build it, there is NEVER enough room...

If that property mattered to the Hysterical Society then the would have could have and should have gotten a grant either via federal state or private to save the property. Its not that difficult, and if the buildings on the property mattered to the owners they could have applied for interest free loans to put a roof on them.
The only person who really gave a damn about the property is the person who bought it to build on it.

The garage will have Cable, enough power and a 1/2 bathroom. I talked to the plumber about the sewer dump & he recommended that we call it a "cleanout".

No on the pets.

I was going to go with a 12' wide X 14' door in the center with 14' ceiling in the center to accommodate a motorhome, but I'm leaning more towards a trailer now & a 12' X 12' door with 14' ceiling in the center. the outboard doos will be 10' wide X 8' tall with 12' ceilings
I'm not a fan of motor homes either. Imo, trailers take less maintenance since there's no drive line in them. If you neglect the MH, it will cost you much more to get it back into shape.

Wait until your all done building everything and have your CO.. Then do it! Submit must know about small town politics, tweak them and they'll screw with you.
Small towns are probably the worse ones too but moderate sized towns ain't much better if at all it seems and the huge cities take forever to get anything done plus the bigger they are, the worse city services seem to be.

The entire property has been neglected for at least 25 years and it was long overdue to level everything which is what we are doing.

We went through all sorts of crap with the local Hysterical Commission and to be quite frank, after what they put us through, I just wanted it ripped down ASAP so we can get going on the new structure. I wanted to email them pictures of the excavator demolishing it, but Submit talked me out of it.

I am with HT413! Those organizations hold up so much bullshit it isn't funny. They dick around and lollygag and in the end, you get no farther ahead half the time then you were when you started. Some buildings are worth saving, but **** thats rotted is worth getting rid of. I would'a had a "bonfire" hahahaha! Then again, out by me there isn't much around so they will still do controlled burns. Lookin' good man love the new setup. I was jealous of the barn/house when you were doing that because I wanted to do something similar. In my area, they won't let you build a structure without a dwelling already on the property. It is funny when you own land, but in the end can't do much of anything on it without permission and then are taxed beyond belief. We always joke and say you don't own 25 acres......you are renting it from the government until you die and they can't tax you on it anymore.

The sole purpose of their job job is to slow you down, make you jump through hoops, cost you money and cost you time. The Conservation Commissions are even worse.

Basement & garage floors got poured on Friday. I'm away & my builder sent me these two pictures of the garage. The basement is being burnished also......
