engine builder screwed up. Maybe not. Update

Get a better set of glasses also! Bet that doesn’t happen again. I hate metric!
Ohh come on, i use metric for every single unit of measure and for those who grew up with this system is quite accurate, although this is a topic that we already have arguments for; pros and cons, space craft has being lost for not making the proper conversion, this is a peccata minuta, and an easy fix.

Leave it to someone who has only known Metric to defend it. We lived by SAE and were doing fine all those years. Now some of the **** is metric and some SAE. How can we win?

I started marking bolts torqued so I don't inadvertently miss one...…….. or more!

Right! And ALL of my machinist instruments measure in decimals.....so now I have to replace 1000's of $$$ worth of tools? Screw it.....I've retired lol

Thanks for sharing your F up with us Doug.

Let that be a lesson to us all and never borrow Doug's friend's digital torque wrench! :D

Hope all is well with the rod, put her back together and let her roll !

Yes this issue has brought planes down! I had a thread up on this a few weeks ago about the promise in grade school on the imminent conversion promise never delivered. Its frustrating but you'll be fine real soon! At least a rod didn’t fly off! Are you going to check that rod bearing on that wet cylinder?

I don't blame the Cometic's at all. This set was new. The last set was reused 3 times. The pitted surface along with lack of torque is my bet. Personally I've used Cometic's that looked worse than these again. Just to lazy to do it twice if it did have an issue. Pulled the piston and rod. Looks good I'll fixture check the rod tomorrow.
Doug

Good it wasn't something catastrophic
good you caught it
easy enough fix, it still sucks

good luck, hope all goes well next time out
Look forward to the results

I feel a set of consistent 8.99 (or better) coming
good air, good track, great runs

So, how far was the haul to Columbus?

Cranky-5+ hrs? Don’t know how fast he drives! Another thought is how often does a torque wrench needs calibrated, irrespective of not reading it right? There’s always some minuscule screwup.

Well, I always fired up my race car before going very far but it stayed in the shop and not in the trailer. Well, back then I didn't have an enclosed trailer but even if I did, I would still unload it.

On the torque wrench....depends on what kind it is and who borrowed it last lol. Had a clicker that was always pretty close when checked against others but it did get checked once at a seminar I attended and it checked good. It got loaned to a neighbor and I told him NOT to leave it tightened up and that's exactly what he did. I noticed no one was home the next morning after he borrowed it the afternoon before. I had this feeling I needed to go check things out and sure enough, it was left out under his carport and sitting on the intake of his truck and tightened up so I took it home and never said a word to him.....as he never said a word to me either and that's the way it was from then on.

Sooo...all this simple proves your human?:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Your doin' okay. (don't let it happen again!:p)
Can happen to anybody. Truck on...

And never to be borrowed/lended out again!!!!

:lol:Sometimes, even I make a mistake Doug.
Hard to believe, I know.
At least you identified the issue quickly and will fix it.

Did you do this? You're good. The guy who built this Mercedes diesel must have had a bad day and left number 5 rod bolt loose. Gave me and my customer a really bad week. That engine had 83 miles on it when the rod windowed the block and snapped the starter off.
