Garage Lights

Speaking of garage lighting, mine has a series of old salvage 2x4 light fixtures that were taken out of an office building as part of a remodeling. My brother was kind enough to snag up a pickup load for me back when I was hard wiring my garage.
A nice stash of replacement fluorescent bulbs, too.
As I've come across recently though, the usual ballast failures are starting to occur in these old units - and replacement ballasts cost $$$, more than I can justify spending really.

My cheap-assed, redneck solution? I've started to replace each unit with one of those $16 specials from WallyWorld - you know, the ones that sort of look like proper light fixtures, but are actually LED strips in those flimsy white metal reflectors.
The light they put out is pretty intense, more so than the 4 bulb fluorescents put out.
I figure hey, if these things fail sooner, so what? Easy to swap out and dirt cheap - and they don't get near as hot, either.

Anybody else tried those cheap lights out?

I've replaced all my 4 foot flourescents with the LED in my basement and really made it so much brighter. Unfortunately I have 8 footers in the garage and haven't seen them in LED yet.

Our electrician installed 4 4ft leds and one 8 ft. Very bright.

LED lighting is rated in Lumens.
The greater the number, the brighter the output.

One of my florescent fixtures crapped out so in picked up a LED one. Light output is great but plays hell with the radio.
