'67 Coronet top speed

I was at test and tune night last night and I don't know what year the VW Golf was (looked kinda new) but I asked if it was the original engine (not a swap) and got a YES answer.
4 wheel drive, automatic, turbo....
Running consistent 11.2s at 120 in the 1320!
That would have been a Golf R, but definitely modified. The standard ones are pretty fast, but not 120 in the quarter fast. The ones I used to race in my Barracuda were 2 litre naturally aspirated, probably did the quarter in about 16 secs at 85 mph! Top speed they always did better though, given a long enough run. It's all to do with what roads the cars are designed for - the American cars were more stoplight to stoplight, especially with the ridiculous 55 mph speed limit in most places. The European cars were terrible for acceleration in comparison, but had better top speeds in general.
I'm really interested to see how the Coronet goes - question for the OP - what does your engine rev to when accelerating? Is it running out of breath at 4,500 or 5,000 or will it turn higher? That should give you a good idea of your top speed. I re-read your initial post and if it's a '74 engine with standard heads it might not rev that high?

The tire diameter as stated (225/70/15) is 27.4" total.

Not all tires are the exact same size based on their P number. Furthermore, 27.4" still does not come out to 138 mph. Maybe you forgot the torque converter slippage.

The motor on my car starts to lay down around 5300 on my Autometer tach.It does have an 800 AVS/2 on an ancient CH4B intake.I'm hoping for a buck thirty, but that might be wishful thinking!

I can't help but think that the Coronet may be slightly aero-challenged!

I read your initial post as the motor being stock, but I guess you did not really say that. Those two things add up to a lot more than stock as the factory intake and carb are a big handicap What else is not stock? Like compression ratio, heads and head work, and what cam.

My car is a '67 Coronet Deluxe sedan,stock '74 440 HP with original internals,new rings,rod bearings & timing set / 727 / 2.94 8 3/4" rear,HP manifolds w/ TTI 2 1/2" exhaust.It has 225/70/r15 tires.
Next week I'm planning on driving this car to Blytheville Arkansas to run it in an E C T A speed trial event just for the fun of it. They offer 1/2 mile or 1 mile runs.I'm going to run the 1/2 mile,I think anything more than that would have the Coronet's tongue hanging out.
Have any of you guys ever run in one of these events? This will be my first time.Anyone care to guess what my car would do in a 1/2 mile?

They likely will check the tires speed rating. If it just has "S" rated tires they may limit you to the 112 MPH top speed?
to do 130 MPH, you would want an "H" rated tire or better.

The heads are the stock uncut 902's,the pistons are the originals (.165" below the deck @ tdc!)CR is less than 8 to 1.The cam is a really small Hughes SEH1620BL(216/220 @.050") with their recommended springs.

How do you like that cam? I have that grind in a 9.5:1 compression 360 and I like it alot in that combination.

From what I have read of the rules believe the first time limit will be 115 mph. You have to qualify for faster speeds and that gets to the point of being regulated by equipment.
It should be fun anyway. How are your brakes and what is the slow down distance?

I hit 5500rpm in my 69 Barracuda fastback with a 2.76 rear end on the motorway a few times. That was only a hopped up 318. I can't remember the tire sizes, they weren't very big, maybe 205/65 and I think I was doing over 140 mph. I reckon you should hit 140 easy.
But may be not in a half mile.

For what I use the car for I like it fine.It idles smooth as glass & has really good power for passing at higher speeds.I put this car together for long distance road trips & highway driving with reasonable gas mileage (about 14 mpg with the old 1407 750,haven't checked it yet with the 800 AVS/2).This speed trial business is kind of a whim for me but it sure sounds like fun! It fits in with a week long road trip that will also take us fishing in Tennesee & down the Bues Highway to Missisippi.

Ok, having seen pictures of the car (and barn door aerodynamics) and noting the torquey set up (rather than top end power) I realise I was being optimistic. New guess is 115-120 mph. Good luck, be safe.

Ouch! With that, now I'm now thinking more that you'll run out of distance before you hit peak rpm.

I like the cam.

Overall, it sounds like a good set up with well balanced parts.

I'm really looking forward to how it goes!

I have done a couple of 1/2 mile events. My c6 corvette would do mid 160's, that was with a heavily modded LS3...cam headers, supercharger, and meth injection (700 HP at the wheels on the chassis dyno).

My Gen II Caddy CTS-V, bone stock, runs a consistent 135 in the half mile (550 advertised HP).

My guess for your car will be in the 110-115 range.

Here is a link to a half mile event results page. You should be able to get a pretty good gauge where you stand performance wise against these other cars. Tires, suspension, steering, brakes need to be in top notch condition, tight, and well set up!!!!! You are also going to rev the hell out of your engine for an extended period...is it up to the load your going to put on it. The cars I did it in felt rock solid at top speed and it was great fun in those cars.....However, I don't think it is something I would ever consider in my RR.

Not trying to talk you out of it but....MAKE SURE your car is ready!!!!

I blew the original factory steel head gasket on my 440 in my referenced story above, in my 71 Charger R/T.
So, yeah...

Well the road trip is over & everything went well,2200+ miles,no problems & lots of fun! After checking out the track (2.7 miles long!) I decided to run the full mile, here are the results...
