Hi,

I have recently finished a complete restoration on my 72 Charger.

I took the car out for my first test drive and one of the issues I have after adding more fuel at the gas station is that fuel leaks out on to the ground between the fuel filler neck and the grommet that goes into the tank. This is a brand new tank, new grommet, and the filler neck has been cleaned, sandblasted, and powdercoated black.

What could cause this with new components? Are there better grommets out there? At this point I can't remember if this is one from Summit, something that come with the tank, or otherwise. I didn't figure it was good to start with shopping for sealant to put around it before asking around. Any advice on next steps would be appreciated, thanks

I remember reading one time that some people had issues with some of the new grommets out there. I bought mine from Rock Auto. No problem.

I would replace the grommet with a new one. Something could have damaged the one you have at installation or it could have had a defect to start with. If the filler neck slides into the tank too easily, I would check out why, I usually have had to lubricate the filler neck a little to get them in without damaging the grommet.

Thanks, all. I will take a closer look at mine tonight - I recall it going in pretty tight. I am not sure if maybe i went in too deep or not deep enough with the filler neck? I'll also check for any damage to it.

For what it is worth - I don't see one on Rock Auto right now, and I did find my receipt for Summit for this one: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/amd-891-1068-1

I had same problem. Ordered new neck & grommet from MrMoparts in Arizona. No more problem.

I ordered one from Summit and it had two surfaces that sealed. It felt very loose, so I ordered another similar to the stock grommet (one sealing surface). It was a lot tighter and no leaks.

Sounds like I will need to order the more expensive one from steel...I took a closer look just now... Should I be sitting it in past the lip pointed out in the photo or just up to it like I had it?

the filler tube goes all the way up to the lip. I bought a 7.00 grommet off eBay with excellent results

When installing a little liquid soap on filler neck allows it to slide in easier.
