How many of you racers are using an auxilliary trans cooler in conjunction with the cooler contained in the radiator?

Auxiliary cooler only.

Aux cooler in front of radiator on my old Coronet. My new 65 Belvedere has the cooler mounted on the frame rail. I don't like that placement because of possible rock damage. I will have to change it.

None of you drive your race cars in cold weather right? The transmission is just like any other part of the drive train. Proper operating temperature must be obtained for it to function correctly. Maybe extended time in the staging lane is going that for you, maybe not? Chrysler recommended cooling threw the radiator transmission cooler first to obtain that correct operating temperature and then the aux to help maintain that temp.

I figured that this was a racing question because it was in the racers forum . Any street car that I've owned I had both hooked together.

I was taught to run the trans lines to the cooler first then through the rad to maintain the proper operating temp for the trans . this for a street vehicle or work vehicle .

It will work either way but the proper way is OEM then the aux cooler.

I’ve heard that trans coolers also have a temp valve? that doesn’t let fluid flow until it reaches a certain temp. Do not take that as gospel.

I have not seen a trans cooler yet with a temp valve and non of mine do. Maybe that is something new?

Always ran it's own cooler with fan on it. Also run syn oil in mine keeps the temp down in good range.

open headers in my drag car, thinking that mite help warm up the trans a bit, lol

I've decided to use both coolers as I have in the past - thanks for all the input.

I run the cooler under the driver seat area. Trans temp stays below 200 95% of the time. My buddy runs Super Comp and Super Gas. His have a temp switch and run in a heater/cooler. Many time NHRA div champ, been #2 &3 in the country in NHRA points as well.
