I have started to thin out my stash and am thinking about selling a 1972 dated 340 engine. This was rebuilt in the 90s and not used for very long. The car it was in was parked when the owner got a new Dodge Stratus. I've had it on a stand in my shop since 2013. It is an externally balanced engine but is complete except for the carburetor and exhaust manifolds. It has OEM chrome valve covers and an iron intake but I'd include an LD340 intake. I have a forged 273 crank that could be used to make it an internally balanced engine if someone wanted it. I know what I'd like to get for it but do not know what the market is for a used 340. I heard it run but did not drive the car. What kind of price is right for an engine like this?

Something like that should fetch at least $1000 easy.
 
I paid $1,500.00 for a complete 340 (.040 over) in the Sacramento area a couple of years ago "Complete" from air cleaner to oil pan which had a forged crank from something else. Kind of a hodgepodge motor, rear sump oil pan, 440 Carter AVS (not from HP 440), different year factory air cleaner, two passenger side exhaust manifolds, 1.88 intake valves. Obviously rebuilt at one time, but water intrusion ruined the .509 camshaft and valve train. I probably paid too much, but at the time I was pleased to have finally found a motor. Difficult to price these motors for sure.

It was advertised as a 1971, the block had a later 1971 casting date, and the serial numbers showed it was built for either '72 or '73 model year.
 
Around here people list them for 2500 to 3500. Selling them at that price might be a whole other story, lol.
 
I sold a 72 340 shortblock with a 69 forged crank a few years back for 2000. In addition to the forged crank it had kb hyper pistons and upgraded ARP full lower end assembly also included aftermarket deep oil pan, sfi balancer and lunati cam. If its external balance with stock internals I would say list it a 2k and see if you get any bites. There are guys around here trying to get 1500 for a block. They are delusional in my mind but the world is full of morons so someone may actually pay them that.
 
It is supposed to be .030 over with an upgraded cam. It was built by a Mopar guy here in Sacramento and used in a 72 Scamp before my buddy had it in a 65 Valiant. It was supposed to be used in his 65 Valiant convertible but when he decided to abandon the project, I bought all the parts he had been saving.
I was thinking $750 for the setup but if values actually run over $1000, I am surprised!
