Working on my original 383 Roadrunner. The exhaust headpipes are in decent shape so I'd like to find a way to best remove the factory mufflers without destroying the headpipes. Any tips or advices for doing this?

You have to cherry red the muffler neck with a torch so you can turn it and get the clamp mark out. Or

You can slice the muffler neck with a torch or air chisel if you don't want to save the muffler.

Are you saving the mufflers also? Oxyacetylene Torch is always nice for this job. Easy to cut the top layer and leave the pipe untouched.

A cut off wheel is OK, cut 2 slots and bend the piece up to clear the ridge the clamp made. Don’t cut too deep into the pipe below.

Used a port-ta power, ran it from trans cross member to front of muffler. Put a block of wood on front of mufflers to save them also.

Are you good with a cutting torch? It's pretty easy to cut the outer pipe off an inner. One slot is usually all you need to cut to loosen the joint. If not how about a abrasive cut off wheel, just cut a slot.

If the mufflers, hangers and pipes are original to the car, could you post some pictures of the pieces? I am always looking for documentation of original pieces and once they are removed or mangled, it is much tougher to work from

Thanks for your efforts and good luck with the process!!

I let Walden's lad Steve do it... before he duplicated my originals! :D

Sure! I can show you what I've found. I kick myself now, but I did Sawzall the tail pipes to get the exhaust out of the car. But other than that, they are intact. I was wondering if I could try and weld the old tail pipes back together to get me by?

On another note, would anyone happen to have one good used 68-70 Plymouth B-Body chrome tip? One of mine was missing from the get-go.
