Hey guys, chiming in to get input on how to prep my trunk on my 64 Polara 500 for gray spatter paint. I’m going for an original look with the spatter paint and just the trunk liner on top of it. My main concern is what is the correct method to prep and paint over the oily black seam sealer.

I don’t have any pictures of mine for reference yet, but I will post them when I take them tomorrow. As always, I love the input from everybody on this site!

I would probably try to remove all the old seam sealer and redo it. Trunk paint originally had little to no primer and prep. With today’s refinish products I would redo the seal sealer and shoot with a sealer or thinned epoxy primer and then top coat with spatter paint.

Whatever you do, wipe it down with wax and grease remover until the rags come up clean. If the old seam sealer keeps coming up paint won’t stick to it.

Well the paint never stuck to the original stuff so are ya after "factory correct" or aren't ya ?!?!?

Good point Stanton. This definitely isn’t a full-blown restoration. Just more of a go for the original look. I tried posting a few pictures for what I’m going for, but I have trouble often on loading pictures here. Very well could be user error !

Here's a few pics from my '65 Coronet survivor. I don't have any with the trunk mat removed, as it is cracking when I try to move it. The paint is gone off the original sealer in spots.

I plan to touch it up a bit with some over spray, but not too much...

Buy a good quality. The stuff in spray bombs is just ****.

Any recommendations? All I’ve looked at so far is Eastwood’s stuff and I see that OER is in the market as well.
