Cars that they may fix one day

Guy has a 71 Charger. Been sitting for 23 years behind an out building. He's 84 years old. Still says he has plans to restore it as of last year. Yeh....right, he has a walker. Drives me nuts seeing that:realcrazy:....oh well, as stated above, to each his oown I guess.

It will be for sale some day just have to wait it out

Some people have strong attachment to inanimate objects. Memories, feelings, etc so the thought of getting cars that remind them of time past going again is a big deal. It's not like they all watch auto auctions and want to get rich on selling them. Most can't put a price on their memories so they hold on.

Then there are those who do watch the car auctions and think they are sitting on a gold mine.

threewood, I agree with you on both cases. When people would ask my brother about selling the Chevelle and say it's worth allot of money, he would respond,"Really? I only paid $4200 when I bought it." He was another that didn't care what it was worth.

Not an I'll fix it up up some day story, but similar.
Back in '81 I had a '70 GTX. Somewhere along the way before me, an A-12 RR drive train was swapped into it. So I had a '69 shifter instead of the original pistol grip. There was another '70 GTX sitting in the front yard of a house just outside of town rotting away. It was inviolet with white stripes down the side. Driving by at night your headlights would hit those reflective stripes and they would just glow.
One day I stopped and asked the owner if he'd sell me pistol grip shifter out of it that I needed. But he wouldn't. He would only sell the whole car, and he wanted $1,000 for it. This was kooky money back then for a rusted out muscle car. The last time I saw that car (sometime in the later '80s), it was still in the same spot, and it had rotted so badly that the GTX emblem on one of the quarters had rusted off and was laying on the ground.

I will tell you guys a funny one.
Back in the mid 70s a local kid here { baker } had a 55 chevy gasser on the street.
Local terror , hauled azz. he ran it around for 2 summers.
Another guy { Glade } bought it and did nothing with it, it has sat parked under some trees since 78 , many have tried to buy it, even baker.
The funny part is what pisses Glade off is everyone that tries to buy it refers to it as bakers 55 even though glade has owned it over 40 years.
Myself I do it for the hell of it, When I see Glade I ask him if he still has Bakers 55

Well maybe if Glade drove it like Baker did, people would have started calling it Glades 55. :)

I stopped asking because I already know this old hard head answer, I try to buy the car, get it for free, restore it for free, nothing , it's a Volvo 1960 p 122 or Amazon it's complete no parts missing, one owner he bought the car new; the owner says he'll restore the car one day, yeah right he's 85, my only chance to get my hands in that Volvo is to wait to the owner to died, if I don't die first, I forgot to tell you guys, the owner is my grandfather :( :BangHead:

Yup... be a vulture purched lurking not to far .. and wait it out..

Family can be like that. My Dad was a bit like that. Wouldn’t part with stuff even though it was clear it was never going to be used again.

It costs so friggin much to restore these things, "someday" aint nevah gonna happen for most ppl.. Trust me, I've been doing "someday" for 36 years and its still not done!!

You are right. Every day you wait , it's only gonna cost more.

Not sure this will make sense. I've read it several times and... here goes.

I can see both sides. Why? I am/was that guy. Between my dad(caught the bug from him and grad dad) and I, gathered cars and were going to fix some day. One car I've owned for over 40yrs,(11-12 sitting and parts cars) and am ashamed of what I left happen to it. But life/kids/moving/divorce/layoffs, remarriage and where we lived(small housing developments and no room, everything stored somewhere else) helped cause a lot of it, and I could not catch up. But still kept collecting parts and cars. I retired 4yrs ago and moved back to the home area, but still not going to make it all happen. I've been trying to sell/let go of things. Dad got Alzheimer's before we could get anything completed and mom passed a yr ago. 2 brothers that wanted to scrap everything with no real interest. They hung onto a few, but I'm the one with the cars and parts. I've had several people ask about my cars. Told them I would sell and gave a ball park figure. They say it seems a fair price, want to come look and I figure we'll dicker. They never show. Or you give someone a price on a part and they can't even let you know if they want it/too much or make an offer. It goes both ways. I had gathered 3 '55/56 half ton pickups to fix. They left the first of the year. May loose storage also(all beware if you have cars/parts stored in anything belonging to family, brothers/uncles). My car of 40yrs., (I'm going to get gutted), is a '69 Swinger 340 4spd. Left sit because of all the above, that now it needs a complete transplant into another body. I still have the majority of parts(some stolen) and a parts car. Yeah it's sentimental. It was my first car, first marriage, first car my daughter rode in, but now I don't have the means to complete, too many other things on my plate. 2 cars that will take a lot to convince me to sell are my dad's and grand pap's. So yes, I see both sides. To some of us it's like chopping off an arm or worse.
Sorry to have bothered and unloaded, but wanted to give my .02 worth.

I always stop when I see or find old abandoned cars/trucks. Get lucky once in a while. I have found a bunch of cars for my buddies over there years since I am maxed out. I was able to get my 70' Road Runner for free by stopping by the right place at the right time. The dude just gave it to me.

I have been trying to downsize, and sold off about 8 of the worst project cars that I have last year. I sold a 68 and a 70 Charger that were rollers,a 73 Satellite, a 73 Charger, a 68 Imperial convertible project, a 68 Satellite convertible. I sold a nice 71 Satellite to a friend of mine, and I am selling a 71 383 Charger SE to another friend. I am also going to sell my 71 Charger R / T 440 4 speed car, that is also a roller soon. I have also decided to sell my 70 Charger R / T V code project car to by a Hellcat Challenger that I can drive now. The problem is that I am still buying them too. I bought the Daytona stock car project, a 71 Charger R / T from Arizona, the 75 Dodge van, a 79 Little Red Express truck, and a Challenger shell recently. I still have 20 project cars, but I had 26,so I guess I am going in the right direction. The only one that I am really disappointed in myself for leaving it outside and neglecting it is my 78 Little Red Express truck. I had it running about 2 years ago, and I was planning to start driving it again and the alternator guage caught fire and melted the wiring back to the voltage regulator, so I got discusted with it,and I have not worked on it since!

It really has nothing to do with the car. It's the dream and the owner has many years invested in this dream of him in that car. Scenarios have played out in his mind over and over and to let it leave would be a personal failure or an act of abandonment of his visions. It happens in relationships and politics as well. Want his car? Wait for senility and his dream has been forgotten..

You lucky dog

I have a friend of my dads that has a Mopar dream field. several GTX 68,69,70. Has a 340 6pack cuda. 2 69 super bee's. and many more! even has a 69 dodge charger racecar that my dad built in the early 80's car has not moved in 31 years. every time i ask about any of them he says I'm gonna fix them one day. I keep telling him he needs to sell them now because when something happens to him his son will sell them for scrap. He also has a lot of ford crap too. I just don't understand. Next time I'm up that way I'll stop and take some pictures.
Who else knows someone like this?
Everyone one of us on this forum is like that. Some of us have got it done and some of us are in some stage of completion and others waiting for the lottery to come in. But we all have a reason for having it and won't sale it even when the money looks really good. I believe that for most of us having that dream car may it be a real gtx super bee and my case my 64 440 . Won't be sold because of the dream or the love value of the car. Memories in some cases you can't put a value on because of what it meant and how long you have held on to it. But in the case of hoarding that's crazy I know a guy like that and tells everyone he is going to get them on the road someday as the rust dirt and for most part become cat houses. It's sad but it happens.

I have owned my 70 Charger R / T SE since I was in high school, if the day comes when I can only have one that would be the one. I brought my kids home from the hospital when they were born in that car. My daughter was 5 years old in this picture, she is 31 now.
