Hi all

My polara has the stock 2 barrel carby on it, I was wondering whether or not to replace it with a Holley or reco the original carby ?

What are your thoughts ?

I would leave it alone if it were me. I've had pretty good luck with mine (BBD?). I don't think it's ever had a rebuild kit either. The only thing I ever had to mess with is the pump shooter was lame, and caused an off the line bog, like I had to pump a little to get the car moving. Simple adjustment tho, and I do believe that membrane is leather, definitely not rubber like you'd expect.
 
I rebuilt mine and unfortunately must have left a small piece of lint in it somehow, made me wonder if I should have replaced it.

A member here not only diagnosed the issue, but told me exactly where to look for debris, and there it was!

Runs great now.

The only other issues I encountered:
Of the multiple base gaskets I initially used the wrong one, which cut off the path for the pcv vaccum.
The accelerator pump in the kit fit, but the top was incorrect, it was flat and not a rod. I just soaked my original in oil, as it's leather, and it's fine. Found out later you can buy the correct piece separately.
 
Rebuild the correctly metered carb if all else is basically original.

Mine has to have fuel poured into it for a cold start and occasionally likes to stall and a stop sign or give way etc.
I have played around with it but I think it definitely needs a reco.

Sometimes that's more about a worn out fuel pump than a bad carb. Also, I think we are used to everything just starting right up these days that we tend to forget the old day norms. I vividly remember hanging out with my aunt when she would take us places in her '69 GTO, she used to pump the gas like ten times before attempting a cold start. And I mean she would flog that gas pedal. And it always fired right up then. That was a new car, and we thought nothing of it, but it would seem quite weird nowadays.
 
I knew the OP was an Aussie just by the title...."Carby" ? That is great!

That's a good point re being used to newer cars !!

I do have a new fuel pump and will try pumping the gas more tomorrow

Wow - she shouldn't a had to do that much pumping. Couple of snaps maybe. The first press sets the choke and maybe giving it a little help when cranking need be...otherwise risk flooding.
