Replacement of gnarly oil pan - Ed's next mini-project

Good that you got a pan from someone you could ask questions of. I bought a 6 qt. pan off Ebay ( new) Looked great, had an internal slosh baffle. clearanced for the tie rod ends= idler arm---But , the cross link was nearly touching the pan.. What a PITA trying to increase that clearance... Motor mount spacer plates did not work out well........................MO

I post about all sorts of things car related and otherwise....I see it as another form of conversation. Sometimes a member has a story or a tip that helps or makes me laugh.
Oil pan swaps....Yeah! I have used a few different pans. The current one is a 6 quart HEMI pan. I have had leaks with every pan I've installed, some slight, others not so slight. I have never tried Superformance gaskets though they get great reviews. Also, the gasket sealer know as The right stuff is also highly recommended. I'll be pulling the pan soon to bang out a small dent and use those 2 products...Hopefully it will seal up nice this time.

Think read to much into rudely. Ed probably saw the underside of his car. His eyes focused on the pan.
When are we gona see some pics, Ed?
Hell, I don't even understand your possible explanation, Fran. :)

As far as to when, I have no idea - the body shop, whose owner said it would be "no problem" to get the GTX back
in a week, has apparently decided to go to Alabama for some sort of softball tournament or some such.
Learned that from his wife via Facebook.
Hey, if the work takes longer than expected, that's fine - but at least call a fella and update the customer, eh?

Thank you Kern. I don't feel so bad now. I've had my oil pan off twice, used moroso blue gaskets, and some rtv cork gaskets, and always have a seep at the right front.
Please update us on the rightstuff. I've been told it works great with cork gaskets.

OOPs. Should have read: Think yella71 read to much into rudely.
He took it to mean as number 1 definition and you meant it like number 2 definition. See attached.

I get so P.o.ed at people that want to take your money at their convenience. My painter knew how much I wanted it done for the first of two, important to me shows( local) He has had the car all Winter. I picked the car up to install the OH engine and Tranny( 2 weeks) because he was busy with other things. I miss the first show because he " wants to see the Grand Canyon" for a week. Second show is tomorrow, and MAYBE the Satty goes into first primer today .....Procrastination and lack of motivation by a business owner-operator. And they can't figger out what makes old guys grouchy !!! My fault for liking the guy... Rant over few a few minutes..........MO

Oooooh, I get it now. Thanks.
I actually had to go back and look where I had used the word. :)
Naw, the CAR "rudely" reminded me of my oil pan issue, not any humans....

I had a talk with the owner today and come to find out, only one of the two owners is actually out of town.
Unfortunately, the shop wound up with half their help being out for the week sick (one of 'em even has pneumonia!),
so they're behind a bit. Owner explained that there's only a couple guys (including himself) allowed to touch my car,
so they're playing catch up a bit, won't be ready probably til mid-week next week.
He also told me as they dug into a couple of "surface rust" spots I'm having them do under each door; they found
the previous owner had just slapped fiberglass over holes and finished it off, which is why it's bubbling back up now.
He wants the time to fix it properly, which of course I understood.

My problem was more with a lack of communication than anything else. I understand **** happens, but damn son,
SAY something once in a while, you know?
He apologized for that, assured me again that the car was receiving "proper love" and that they keep it locked up in
the shop right next to his office, so I feel better for the moment.
I guess...

Back to the subject at hand. I've received all the stuff I ordered from 440Source now.
The pan looks nice (but man, watch out for the edges! Sharp as razor blades!).
The windage tray is thicker than I expected, but says American made on it.
The pickup is....weird to me, but then all I've ever known are the stock looking ones.

Question is - am I going to have to fool with the pickup to get it to fit properly?
Reminder - here's what I received:
Oil Pan
#200-1123 http://store.440source.com/1970-71-Hemi-E-Body-6-Quart-Oil-Pan/productinfo/200-1123/

Pickup
#121-1055 http://store.440source.com/Oil-Pickup-Tube-5-Deep-Sump-3_8-thread/productinfo/121-1055/

Windage Tray
#127-1030 http://store.440source.com/Windage-Tray-Stock-Stroke/productinfo/127-1030/

I hope I don't have to cut the pickup tube and re-weld; my weld-fu is exactly ZERO, I have no equipment or
anything for that.

The pickup looks like a Milodon unit.

So does the windage tray, least to me....

I bought a "Hemi" 6 quart pan and some type of "matching" pickup. The pickup did NOT clear the windage tray, I would have had to deeply notch it so I used my existing pickup. I had to bend it to go deeper since I had a 5 quart pan before.

Ed those types of pickups don't want to touch the pan like the factory pieces. The clearance to the pan bottom can vary a bit and that's OK. If the threads get reasonably snug and you get something around 3/8" or 1/2" between the pan and pickup, you'll be golden...

Man, I hope so since I'm going to be fooling with all this while under the car! :)

You can see how I measured for my pickup, post #15. My pan didn't look like their picture so I'm not sure exactly what I got. My pickup was a bit long as I heard most are, so they won't be too short.

https://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/threads/oil-pan-woes.96530/
Yeah, I read that thread and honestly, it's what is making me nervous.
The pan I got is actually a measured 5" deep from flange to bottom of sump - that part checks out.
Their description says the pickup I got "fits" this pan, too... but then I read your thread and think "ut-oh".

The fella at 440Source said the 6 quart "hemi" pan I got isn't any deeper than the stock 4 quart one, but that
doesn't make sense to me - but if by chance they're the same depth, does that mean my stock pickup in the
engine now would work with this new pan, too?

I think I can answer those questions myself, after doing some homework at the Milodon website:
https://www.milodon.com/oil-pans/chrysler-oil-pans.php
Apparently the stock 4qt pan and the "hemi" 6qt pan take the same dang pickups !!
They say the 4qt pan is actually slightly deeper than the 6qt one is. Interesting....
so I guess the only question is whether the windage tray will work with the stock pickup (I'm betting NOT)
or even whether I need a windage tray to begin with??

For street use, I'm not useing the windage tray. The pan has the baffle in it.

Measure where your original pickup sits and compare to your new pan. You might luck out.

Yep, I think that's where this is headed. Even if my existing pickup is damaged, new stock ones are readily available
(even on Amazon!).
Just waiting on the GTX to get back from her makeover....

Like you mentioned, the pan removal was easy compared to the steering link, finally got it off with a BFH. New pan should be here tomorrow, good luck with the project!
I’m going to be tackling an oil pan gasket soon (&/or a rear seal).
I’ve heard before about that center steering link being a BEAR to remove. Any additional *hints*, other than BFH? Lol. Does one use a *tie-rod folk* to separate the center link?
BTW, on my 383, I’m hoping that the windage tray comes off without removing the oil pickup tube... does anyone know?
