Road Runner Horn - Have you got the correct one?

Correction to the video, I paid $150 US for it. No disrespect for the seller, we both didn't know and I hold ZERO ill will... and I was in a pissy mood this afternoon! I do know now what is correct and will be swapping arms, re-tuning the horn so it sounds correct (hopefully), etc. Just want others to know which is correct for which years so you don't jump the unnecessary hoops!

Define NOS on the horn with the white box? It looks like one of those 80's versions.....Not the early true NOS.....

What a difference in sound.....Thats very dissapointing which is the KEY element of those horns.....

See the funny looking small screw head (I think it my be 8 point) That will change the pitch.
 
Why not just look at the date stamping on the horn.
Fine and dandy if your inspecting an OE car for correctness, but not something you can do when ordering what you think is the correct part for you car and the seller can't confirm it's correct either. Long horn, short horn and correct sound was what it was about.. you did watch the video correct?

Yes I did watch it and it is informative but dates are the sure fire way of telling.For instance and I'm not 100% sure but I believe there was a short arm non threaded horn used on 1969 22" core radiator cars long arm on 26" cores. I think it would be great if some owners would check the dates
 
My 1970 Sport Satellite has two horns. Does the RR run two meep meeps? If so are they the same tone?

NOS vs OE. New old stock are generally replacement parts made during the first 10 years after car production and not usually "line" parts. Therefore date code, if any, don't mean much as to correct year application.

Correct.....the accuracy of the parts has to be compared to the original part. So when you find an NOS does not negate it is a factory line original part.

You would be hard pressed to find an NOS correct dated part in which the features match the original line part housing and arm. You may find an NOS with with a later date in a superceeded or actual pn box but is still incorrect.

Also, the parts on the line were the best of the best parts from the manufacturer and the service parts are not the best in comparison.......

When you do find a true NOS with the correct date range in the original box....you may choke as to what the price will be....

With dated parts the best option is to rebuild and restore your original if possible...

Hence is the importance of this thread...
 
Okay... I put on my "loops" and had a go at the numbers and have come to the conclusion that OE (Line installed horns) were given a date code. OEM replacements were stamped 12 V and no date code. I have "12V" on both the short arm horn I took off the car and on one of the long arm horns I picked up to restore. On the other long arm horn it is stamped 259 (25th week of '69) so I guess this is my restoration project for another day. On the "NOS" horn that I bought with the short arm, I am highly suspect someone found a batch of Jeep horns, repainted them and slapped stickers on them. Date code is "065", which I believe is 6th week of 1965.. maybe '75? Playing with the adjuster bolt did very little if anything to change the sound, still sounds like an episode of MASH.. but I swapped on the best long arm and it's in the car. Colour seems a TAD off as well! Unfortunately, it's all I have time for in the panic to get her ready to go to Dega so it's on the car....

Thanks, used lots of places. The date stamp of 065 leads me to a car line, as I doubt most non car uses got a date stamp.

Chrysler had Sparton build them with a different tone for the Birds. The adjuster does little to change it, it's only an oscillation distance device when it comes right down to it and not really for tone.

Funny thing is, I have a fork truck in the hangar and never even thought to look at it..but will tomorrow!

The color and sound difference is "shocking" to say the least......

I would be interested in seeing a true early NOS version and seeing if it is dated......Maybe Spartan decided an OTC part was warranted and Chrysler didn't care or catch that...
