Thread size engine to bellhousing

Hey all,

What size threads are on the engine for connecting the bell housing of a 440 engine to 727 tranny?
I need to get some quality threaded bars & nuts to hook up the engine on a engine stand and am not sure i can use the original bolts due to lengt required to go through the bracket of the engine stand.
As it will be UNC, that is not a "off the shelf item" to get here in a Metric world.

I will get some quality studs, bolts and washers for my project ready.
If you go in a hardware store here you will not find any UNC/UNF fasteners so i always need to order something online.
 
if it were me i'd look at the factory type bolts/studs. these can probably be purchased from a restoration business on line. I use factory bolts in both my cars and prefer them. the starter has a stud/bolt combo that i'd look at too.

Whenever i will build it back together i will replace any worn/damaged bolts, just for now i need something to bolt the engine on my engine stand to work on it.
I had it before with another engine i found that the original bolts were too short to use on the engine stand so now i want to be prepared and have something to make life easy.

FWIW I'd go with Grade 8 bolts.

Agree 110%! My car had ARP bolts in for the bell housing bolts when I got it and I hated them. Had small heads on them and just didn't fit well like the stockers do. I prefer the stock stuff as well.
 
Yes i will take some high grade fasteners for assembling it on the engine stand.
I think all fasteners currently keeping engine and tranny together are original, if not i will get a set from somewhere.
Those ARP bolts are good, but as you mentioned for some applications not.
Or they are absolute overkill for the purpose.

If you need more info on the bolts, ARP sells the ones you need and displays the measurements in the description. I tried finding off the shelf grade 8 but couldn't find. I got ARP.
 
I found a local webshop here who does UNC and UNF fasteners, high grade threaded rods.
That should do, guess a 440 with all accessories unbolted is around 300-350 kg right? (650-700 lbs)

Engine stand is rated for 500kg so should be good!

The ones i found are actually advertised as grade 8.8, which is the metric grade indication.
8.8 is similar as grade 5.
Grade 8 would be like 10.9 in the metric system.

iron 440 should be around 650lbs.

Few weeks ago i had my straight 4 cylinder engine from my VW Golf G60 in the engine stand, which will be a joke in managing compared to this big bastard. :D
