Some people ask why a landing ramp is not used. I think that the promoters want the carnage, the damage.
In an interview, Stunt driver Corey Eubanks said that you want the car to absorb the impact and transmit as little to the driver as possible. Of all the ways to land, the nose down approach is the least violent to the driver. You'd think that landing on all four tires level would be best but it is not. The absolute worst is a landing on the rear bumper. The car ends up having two impacts in a tail landing, the back of the car almost seems to cause the front to follow with more energy. That is like two separate hard landings.
Frontal landings offer the driver the chance to brace and absorb the impact with his legs. 4 wheel landings impact the spine. Tail first landings hurt the neck and spine. Nowadays they use suspended harnesses that allow their asses to not make contact with the seat. Some still get knocked unconscious by the impact though.
