As much as we think things have changed over the years and they have a little. They really haven’t.
We all know the story of the Muscle Car Era. coming to an abrupt end. Gasoline crisis of the 70’s and insurance companies. Blah, blah, blah.
Well look at the price of gas now and look at the horsepower that the new Dodge Challenger makes, 900 freaking horsepower on a street driven car !!!

Well you could say, more average young people had easier access to the cars back in the late 60’s putting fear into insurance companies. Well, there’s more people out there today than one might think that have that kind of money at a young age to own a modern Challenger. Or it’s their daddy’s car, etc.
I just put this into perspective. A lot really hasn’t changed. We have motorcycle’s today that do 170mph bone stock that are easily insured.
Gas is probably nearly just as unaffordable to a lot of people.
A lot has changed in the world we live in today. But, as stupid as it sounds. Most major conflicts in today’s society really haven’t changed a lick. Regardless of it involving auto’s, housing, domestic or worldly relations, how we treat people around us. It’s all the same now. There’s just little tweaks. People are dumb as ever, things are expensive as ever, people are racist as ever, etc. etc. etc. Things haven’t changed much. But, we always think they have.
Maybe a lot more major crimes, ignorance, greed and self righteousness. But, everything else is exactly the same. Just twisted a tad. I know this topic is kind of political. But, it is related to the 68-70 era I’m partially referencing. Point is, a lot of instances. Things haven’t changed as much as we sometimes think.

The country is better if you are a lazy piece of **** looking for a handout, it is better for the weirdos that want to walk half naked down the street with rainbow colored hair and nipple clamps.
There has been a strong push to legitimize deviant behavior, lazy people and illegal border crossings. For those losers, life is much better.
For the rest of us, Life is probably about the same.

I'm pretty sure the inflation index does not match up for a $5K 1970 factory hot rod and a 75K 2019 factory hot rod

also remember until the late 1980's in some states liability insurance was not even mandatory, let alone full coverage.

Today 200 feet from my house a pristine Plum Crazy modern SRT Challenger was totaled in an accident. Was driving up the road and saw a purple bumper on the road, thought "boy, this can only come from one car". 50 feet afterward the Challenger appeared sitting on a flatbed, its entire front end exploded like the top of a firecracker. Did not see if it was a Hellcat but wouldn't be surprised. Also, right next to the wreck another pristine SRT Challenger, I think Go Mango, was poking its nose out of a church parking lot, seemingly unharmed. I'm not sure what the story was but it could have been street racing.

Anyways... the more things change and all that...

My opinion depends on one's political affiliation....here in Illinois, we (i did not vote for him) elected a spend & tax expert who ran on the "no new taxes" platform, who immediately signed several new taxes and increased the motor fuel tax per gallon immediately after tsking office. Since there are several "foaming of the mouth liberals" who are hell bent on impeaching Trump, for his "alleged transgressions" perhaps I should start a grass roots movement to do the same thing to our Governor, for his lieing to the voters. In addition, the Governor signed the legalize Marijuana bill, whose program will be run by the friends and cronies faction, with the bulk of the taxes generated going to the general fund and be pissed away in the usual way. BTW...IIllinois has one one largest underfunded state employee's retirement pension plan in the country...but NO ONE ever asks HOW did the plan become underfunded and Where did the collected monies go?
Oh well....I guess I can always move to no tax State....where ever that is.....
I'll take this opportunity to step down from my soap box....and suffer in silence. This will probably be deleted....

No where to run my friend, taxes are always gonna find ya one way or the other. The states that don't have their own income tax get you on property tax so your gonna pay to play regardless. How things change and still remain the same is exactly right, just more devious and twisted. In my opinion the catalyst of our dilemma is greed. If we don't get a handle on this we're in for more transgressions I fear...

The original musclecar era lasted only 7 years, between 1964-1971. With the exception of the mid-80's Buick Grand Nationals, the 2nd generation muslecar era started in 1990 with the 375hp ZR1 Vette and has been ongoing for 29 years now. Crazy, isn't it?

The 1974 Mustang wasn't quite up to the challenge of carrying on the musclecar traditions was it?? :poke: We still had E and B bodies, and A's too for that matter, but it's not the same if you have to provide the drivetrain!

Yes, there were a couple stragglers beyond 1971; the 1973 SD Trans Am comes to mind, but for the most part the era ended in 1971. The funny thing is that today's modern econobox V6 have as much power as the old small block 4-barrel V8

That engine only needed to get its compression ratio back up, shed the pollution control crap, and toss in a cam and it was as good as the best of the era.
Way overbuilt!
Gentlemen,
With the advent of more and more powerful micro processors, engine controls and systems, engine development has grown by several orders of magnitude.
Specifically, coil packs, cam shaft phasing, crank triggered ignition, and of course fuel injection, especially direct injection, where fuel is added to the combustion chamber directly (albeit under very high pressure in the range of 1500 psi) and O2 trim b4 and after the converters. My wife's 2018 Buick AWD Envision uses a 2.5 L 4 cyl engine with 16 valves and gasoline direct injection with 11.5 compression ratio making 200 HP @ 6500 RPM on 87 octane regular gasoline. It runs excellently and gets 30+ mpg. Remember back to the Cadilliac V8-6-4 ....a great idea, but most dealer tech's had no clue how it worked yet alone how to fix it. Eaton Corp. developed unique intake and exhaust valve unloading devices, to eliminate pumping losses on the deactivated cylinders. What price progress.....i'll take today's technology....but l still like my 1970 RS23V0A***** GTX, which like a lady, requires it to be patted on the ***, in order for it to run right..... Just my opinion of course.

That’s funny, but very true. I love and prefer out dated technology on the other hand. But, your exactly correct. Old technology is exactly like a woman. It constantly needs patted on the *** or it will throw fits. Constant pampering and attention every time you turn around. I love to tinker. That’s why old technology fits people’s criteria like myself and with today’s technology you have to be an auto electronic technician. Which most common mechanics are not.
That point you made is exactly why auto technology changed. Everything you can think of mechanically, evolved toward less maintenance pertaining to any kind of machinery and that is where we’re at today. Imagine the progress if that had been implemented toward women ? Ha ha !!!
