Does a bad lifter make the engine miss like a missfire or bad plug ?Anyone had trubbel whit lifters not holding pressuare but not making noise ? Having a miss not related to ignition that i can not find !

Not related to ignition ?? How do you know for sure that it is not ignition related ? You already checked the cap, rotor, wires and plugs ?? If they are new, they can still be bad. Don't assume anything, check everything. Have you done a compression test ? Have you done any recent work/changes to your car ?? If so, can you go back to the original combination ? We need more info... Why do you think it is lifter related ? Disconnect the wires one at a time until the miss is gone.

When does it miss? At idle? Under load? If a lifter was bad enough to make a cylinder misfire, it should show up on a compression test.

Don't think a bad lifter creates a "miss", just rough running all the time. Need more info, when, what rpm, load conditions. On my 1st drag motor chased a "miss" top of 2nd, changed all ignition parts. Was screwed up carb jetting(6 Pak). Bad fuel delivery can create a "miss".

Well thats where i am now changed the whole ignition system miss still there !Exelent komp on all cylinders !Miss is there thru the whole rpm range from idle and upp !Six Pack 64 jets stock six pack cam stock exhaust .Ignition 12 at idle 38 all in steady, vacuum 19 steady !No sputter or popping starts runs idles but misses tried ignition upp and down no change !Explain that to me ?

Does that include spark plugs, and wires? Could have cracked one plug, or one bad plug wire.
Say compression is good. Might not show up, a broken valve spring, valve hanging, bent push rod. Not saying that's it, but those things can mess with valve timing for one cylinder, making a mis-fire.

All that chekt 3 set off plugs in so do you hawe any coment on my initial question regarding LIFTERS ?!!!!

Have you had the V/covers off? Relash? Feel the rocker when valve is closed. You should be able to determine which cylinder is missing when taking of and reinstalling the ign wires one by one.

A lifter can cause a cylinder to miss if it's collapsed but you will usually hear a clacking sound....IF the push rod is still in place. Pull the valve covers and verify that everything is still where it should be. If you have adjustable rockers on it, check to make sure they are as they should be. Years ago I stuck an engine together using the old lifters on the old cam and 3 lifters decided they weren't going to work anymore and the engine ran like crap. You could even have a lobe going flat on the cam. But you say your compression check shows all the cylinders are good? Forget what I just typed...

Guess it could. You have to narrow down where the problem is, which cylinder seems to be the problem. Post #9 tells how to find which cylinder is the possible problem. If you find a cylinder that acts different when you pull the plug wire from the running engine go to post #7. It could be any of those things.

The engine is out tok the heads off for to bee suare nothing bad was brewing got the heads back today the shop found nothing wrong so thats were i am at this point .

A bad lifter can cause a misfire. I had a Pontiac that the rockers always came loose on and it would miss pretty bad. Good luck! Mike

Your question is all about a mis-fire. So, I'll ask a question...just when did this mis-fire begin? Just on it's own? After a tune-up? When?
Better off looking at the entire thing...clues on what it's doing. If it was a lifter, consider the connecting parts (cam, push rods, rocker arms, valves)...a bad lifter will make noise.

Don't take things wrong...we're only trying to help!

Three sets of plugs? Why?

There's a dozen different things, that can make a mis-fire, most ignition related. Just a suggestion, you might try this...hood up, engine idling, at night (or in the dark), and look over the engine. Your looking for any spark flashing. Sometimes plug wires will break down, yeah, even new ones, and can spark to the nearest ground...mis-fire.

If nothing there, look inside the distributor cap, for any damage, carbon tracking, or foul coating on the plug wire contacts.
