I have a 3 car garge in Florida and I have my Charger and 2 mororcycles stored in here. I want to protect these from the enviorments of inside the garage. Some say its the humidty and I am really not sure. My home ac broke down and I am having a new unit installed and I asked the AC guy about installing a duct to cool the garage and he said no I sould by what they call a Mini split unit and this would control the air. Has anyone heard of using these and what is the best method.

Thanks.

A mini split would do nicely in a garage. If you cooled your garage with the main unit it would run for a long time trying to cool that area as well as the rest of the house. A mini split is pretty much a zone AC and will cool and keep that area cool or heated. Being separate from your house ac would take the load off of the main unit trying to cool that extra 1500 square feet.

I have a mini split system in my garage in MI. I put it in solely to control humidity and it does the job. I am using a 12,000 BTU unit but, it can handle the task. Now, my shop is 36' x 68' x 12' and very well insulated so that is a consideration. Even without the A/C on the shop rarely gets over 75*. The indoor unit/evaporator is above the lights over my tool box.

My garage is 28 x 40 and a 36k BTU cools it just fine in the SC heat.

mini splits are great but there's nothing wrong with a main house vent in the garage.

The house unit will only cool to the location of the thermostat.

if there is no thermostat or return air passage in the garage it won't affect the rest of the hose at all.

I do agree with this. My Tstat is on the lower level of my house. Thats why its cold as tits in a tin bra up stairs and meh down stairs, I wanted to disable all down stairs vents and move the tstat up stairs and do a mini split down stairs. The temperature difference is stupid in my split level house. In the winter cold as crap down stairs and hot as a dickens up stairs. And vise versa in the summer.

I did build a room in my garage and cut in a duct for that room. However unless the door to that room was cracked you could not feel the air. The reason there was no way to install a return duct since that portion of the ducting is in the lower level crawl space.

When I had central put in asked about it no was the answer also. A garage fire, car left running or a chem spill. I'm looking at a mini split ductless 18k btu. They wanted $5k for unit plus install, 5 hour job they said. At the time (2 months ago) could have bought the unit and accessories for $2,650. $2,350 for 5 hours work come on. I've run power to a cutoff box outside and put a pad in place. Looking buy the unit and mount outside unit on the pad and wall bracket to hold inside unit. Then hire a repair contractor to finish it. Even if I pay a guy a $1,000 to finish it that is a better deal.

Thats a crazy price for an 18k installed. I only paid $3500 for my 36k Mitsubishi installed.

Labor and taxes are high but $470 and hour, crazy. Had a guy price a cheaper ($2.350) mits unit 18k btu no hyper-heat and pan heater $3,600 with me doing cutoff box and pad. Was going to do it but he wanted $1.800 down when contract signed. I said you'll be paid the second your done and I'd give him 2 contractors I've used. Roofer $9,000 paver for my driveway $14,000, no money up front. He said I don't do that need the deposit. No thanks.
