I have a 71 roadrunner and need to change the fuel gauge sending unit. I have very limited experience and have looked at several articles and videos. I think I have an idea on how to give this a shot. I am going to try not to completely remove the tank, but what I'm not sure about is how to loosen or remove the line behind license plate for filling the tank. I am thinking it twists, but I'm not sure. Any guidance?
Thanks

Jack the car up high. Use GOOD jack stands to support the vehicle at the sub frame in front of the rear spring front mounts. Have the car high enough that the rear axle can drop down without the wheels touching the floor. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY! And then, this should give you enough working room to loosen the retainer, the hose, and the wire, and pull out the pickup/ sending unit.

Agree with above. No need to drop the tank. Biggest issue is make sure you have the tool to loosen the lock ring, might be a bit of a struggle. Also, new lock rings sometimes do not have the right amount of incline on the locking tabs, you might have to tweak it if you are using a new one. Do yourself a favor, make sure you have not a lot of gas in there, you will have the rear end up in the air so the gas will obviously be coming at you (unless you are doing it on a lift which would be great).

And a FSM too

Does your car have tailpipes? One side may be in the way to get the sending unit out. Do yourself a favor and restore the original unit if possible! The new ones are junk and don't read accurate
