Talladega or Bust - 1970 Super Bird Cleanup

Thanks, amazing what pictures in the sun can do. Wish it looked that slick in person... but it has held up well for a 30+ year old cheap enamel repaint.

Still Cool.. and to last 30 years is a good sign..

Spare tire air'd up and ready to put back in. Still had 16 psi in it..

Correct jack that I acquired recently.

9L = Dec 1969.

B base.. that still has some caution sticker remaining. We'll call it patina as I have no time to restore it.

Reproduction jack hold down strap and wing nut and two NOS wing nuts in correct coating, not shiny zinc.

Needed a hook for the jack. Cost more than the jack... US $'s

Licenced reproduction of the correct '70 Road Runner hook.

Trunk mat cleaned up as good as I can get it and back in.

Jack in place with hold down plate.

Spare tire in place and secured.

Like Christmas morning, opening a box I bought 4 years ago this week! Nose sissor jack, crank handle and hold down brackets.

Everybody is in !

Time to clean up the interior.

OE back seat. Getting a bit dried out with one crack on a seam. Hopefully I can soften it up somewhat with some cleaning and TLC.

OE headliner..

OE front seats, dash pads etc. I did put a carpet in in 1990.

OE door panels.

OE seat belts throughout.

Shoulder belt.

Neat how they did the back windows and just left the original triple curve glass frame below it.

Rear seat out.

Someone dropped some hash.. wasn't me, I don't sit back there!

Man I wish the Bee had of been in this shape. Floor pans, etc are absolutely MINT.

Rain shield still in place on the driver's side, missing on the passenger side.

I see many painting interiors body colour... grey primer throughout.

Typical vent frame lower fork broken off the track. Still has the OE "anti rattle" felt on it. Guess I'd better pull the drivers door panel and check it too! Will MIG weld it in place..

So nice to tear into a 50 year old door, 30 years after buying a car on a whim (at 28 years of age) and finding that the metal has never been touched!

All to remove the mirror, so I could tighten up the pivots screw.

Purolator dropped my battery today, to stuff inside an old script case.

AGM is going inside this, that looks just fine.. even though it froze and cracked in half. Just makes it that much easier to work with and when slid (and bonded) back together it broke so cleanly that you can't even see the crack.

Forking Mice...I glued a scrap piece of the Bee's headliner behind it to cover the hole.

Passenger side still has it's headliner retainer rod.

I sprayed some contact cement and pulled the headliner out tight.

Duplicated the OE rod with a piece of metal rod I had. It use to be a ground stake cup holder!

Headliner all glued and pegged in place and the freshly painted package tray is back in with the rear window rubber trim on same.

Historical documentation showing the seam sealer smeared over top of the dual exhaust bracket and bolts.

Historical documentation for seam sealer around the seat belt bolt hole and the OE seat belts installed with spacers and anti-rattle washer.

Seat back retention tab on the wheel well housing.

Full shot to show seam sealer, belts and the fact body is in Grey primer and not the EW1 body colour this car came with. Yellow repaint was done without removing the back seat !

Off with the rubber window seals/wipers that I installed in 1990 to install Cat Whiskers.

Cat Whisker left, rubber seal right. The Cat Whiskers work like an eves trough.

Ready to install the new Cat Whiskers after I lube the window mechanism.

Amazing how much smoother everything works when lubed for the first time in 50 years. You can see the Gray primer dip line in this shot !

Outer Cat Whiskers in place.

"Scubbing Bubbles" for showers and vinyl curtains. Works amazing.

All the mouse **** that fell out of the seat back.

OE Chrysler upholstery punch card.

The Bissel carpet cleaner cans scrub fingers work perfect to clean the fine grain on the seat back.

Seat back all cleaned up.

Seat bottom cleaned once, needs some more scrubbing, but at 105F in the shop I moved on to the seat belts.

Bissel carpet cleaner, spray on a light coat and wipe. Amazing..

Left side with 50 years of dirt, right side after a quick spray and wipe with the Bissel carpet cleaner.

Rear seat "door" panels. Scrubbing Bubbles do your thing!

Glued a crack in the panel backing.

Same drivers side has a good tear with an old crappy repair. At least it's mostly hidden by the seat.

Glue and press.. glue and press.

Black is pretty dull on the upper trim panels. Figure nothing to lose trying the compond polish my paint man gave me for my clear coat on the Bee.

Well looky there...

Wax on.. Wax off...

Why on earth Plymouth stapled the two inner rear window felts is beyond me, when Dodge clips them on like the other SIX spots!

Drill for staples, clamped with vise grips to get tight.

And my only real option was to bend the staples outward, not in like OE, but it'll do the same job.

superbirdcleanup2019part2 005a.jpg superbirdcleanup2019part2 008.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 010.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 012.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 013.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 015.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 016.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 023.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 025.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 026.JPG

Removing the OE window felt from the passenger side rear window interior trim panel. Why the staples.. why the staples..

516 82750 Not sure if that's a partial part number and the 5 digit vendor code or ?

Drivers side tear glued down tight, time to touch it up with some liquid vinyl electric tape.

Came out not to bad.. almost dry and then blotted / poked with the brush to take the shine out.

Passenger side back together and that's enough heat for one night. Other side and back seat back in tomorrow. Then I can put the arm rests back on.

superbirdcleanup2019part2 027.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 028.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 030.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 031.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 038.JPG

Man I hate these little bastards... 3 hours sucking a nest out of the drivers rear rocker through that little hole.

'Door" panels and rear seat back installed to the car.

I made the mistake of sticking my knee on the rear seat some time ago, splitting the vinyl off the sewn bead.

Break out that can of liquid electrical tape again.

Weighted until it dried.

Not bad. Won't survive seating, but looks okay again.

Drivers seat back had a nest in here before, that I'd removed a couple years back. This time a seed supply 1.5" deep !

Checked them both and soaked in Lysol.

Scrubbing Bubbles on the dull, faded, dirty seat backs.

Three applications and scrubbing cleaned them up pretty nice.

Back of the console has been cracked for 30+ years. Time to bond it together so it doesn't get worse.

Plastic welder. Sets in 5 minutes.

Clamped tight and crack weighted with a stack of lead.

Worked pretty good.

Thought I'd better check the drivers door and sure enough the vent post track "foot" is broken off on it as well. Needed to pull the panel to adjust the down stop anyhow so I could get the window out of the way to change window felts.

Out with the old rubber wiper so I can install some new Cat Whiskers.

Method I've found over the decades that works the best. Tip the rubber/felt inward and hoop a piece of wire around the retainer tab.

Then pull like your old man did with a string around your loose tooth!

Hardtops use this extra little felt at the end of the outer cat whisker. Coupes do not.

New Cat Whiskers in place. Time to weld the vent track foots back on and then button up the doors.

superbirdcleanup2019part2 051.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 063.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 065.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 066.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 075.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 087.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 089.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 092.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 098.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 101.JPG

Set up to weld the passenger side vent window track foot back on.

Drivers side same deal.

Good for another 50 years...

Scrubbing Bubbles is getting low in supply !

Stuff works great though!

Tips and tricks for selling used cars ! OE 50 year old carpet on the console and 30 year old carpet on the floor. I never polish my shoes.. so may as well put it to use!

That looks better !

We're getting close.

Time to search out more mice issues. OE heater box and cover.

Part number stamp for reference.

superbirdcleanup2019part2 107.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 111.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 110.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 112.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 113.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 129.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 139.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 140.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 151.JPG superbirdcleanup2019part2 153.JPG

Opening the box was a good idea. Hungry little buggers.

Mice and the fact they manage acorns always amazes me. Pisses me off, but amazes me..

OE blower fan speed resistor board. # 2607302

Passenger vent stack.

Vacuum and arm WAY into the back of the heater box behind the heater core.

Radio bezel snapped off at screws.

Nothing to lose at a fix attempt. Tie wrap to hold together and plastic welder from Permatex.

Good to go another round.

Sun visor tips are toast.

New dildos for the ends.
