hello all.
I have a nice driver quality 68 coronet RT. I’ve owned it for 10 years, and over that time, I’ve refined / repaired / restored several systems and sub assemblies.

One of my latest follies was the rear tail panel and rear tail lights.

I’m posting this thread to show how I did my refresh. My goal was a nice presentable end product.

My parts were in pretty nice shape, but the paint was faded and chalky. There were a few scuffs and dings on the panel as well. My tail light housings had near mint chrome and the silver inside the lamp openings was real nice as well.

So, the plan was to strip the old paint, work out any dings and scuffs to an acceptable level and repaint the parts.

I used chemical stripper to remove the old paint. It worked well and was quick. I masked the tail light openings as I was saving the silver paint inside the lamp openings.

I used 3M fine line tape to do my edges. It pulls nicely and can be pulled around sharp corners.

My paint is SEM trim black. I thinned it with PPG reducer. I sprayed it with an Iwata LPH80 mini gun (jamb gun). It sprayed out nicely and looks great as far as sheen and color goes.

Here’s a few pics:
