I picked up a 62 more door B Body other day with a wasted slant. It will get a V8 of some sort, it has pedals, and will get a stick too. Just wondering, about a poly 318 (64 engine), what does it tale for a bell, flywheel, trans????

All small block stuff. Crank should have the hole for the pilot and may have a bushing in it already. Fly wheel same.Bell if I remember will have one bolt hole that doesn't line up to the block.Unless the bell is for a poly. Most have no problem with that. B body 3 or 4 speed you should be good to go.

I have a '65, and had the cable shift transmission. I swapped it for a 1970 727 TF from an E body. It was exactly the same length, and Schumaker makes a conversion trans mount for the swap. there aren't a whole lot of choices for the Poly head, but it's unique if you pursue that route.

There will be one bolt hole on the engine that doesn't line up with the later transmission. You can see the later 727 below left, the hole above the locating pin on the driver's side is closer to the pin, and on the Poly block they are symmetrical. We ended up drilling a hole on the driver's side of the block above the locating pin to run a bolt through it, it's where the starter is, but I never really had any issues before I drilled that hole. We did it when I swapped to a 4L60e transmission.

You may want to get a v8 K member or you will have to get some swap mounts.

And that's a good thing, at least for me, as the 62 has a V8 k member, so no searching for a big block k if going sb to bb, just change the mounts.

2.02 exh & 1.60 int valves are an easy change and really let it breath. The machinist I used didn't charge me any more than the standard valve job price...said, "I have to cut them either way...I don't care what size the hole is." Original cam can be reground for half what it costs for a new one. Schneider Cams did mine. Gary Pavlovichc is a great source of knowledge and parts for the Poly. Do a search (on this site and the web) of his name.

Good luck. Polys unite!

Here is a setup near you.. found on craigslist.. 383/727 combo.

I moved to S E Texas 2 1/2 yr ago. I did not realize I hadn't changed my profile location!!!! Thanks anyway. I have fond 1 440 1 383, and a couple f polys so far. I admit I prefer a 383 to a 440 and the poly is half the price of the 383.
I admit I like the uniqueness of the poly in my 62, and I know they can run if $ are spent I am just wanting a cool driver.
I have a SB bell, and found a B body A833 yesterday. I have some sort tail A833s I can sell off. As usual, my builds are all my labor and frugale spending $$ wise!!

An LA 318 can be made to turn on for pretty cheap and they are cheap to find too. It will probably cost a bit more than a poly around this area but the poly will cost more to modify. It is however pretty close to being the same block as the LA but the heads are way different and so is the intake. You can even get a 2x4 intake for the poly but they are up there in price.

Yeah, you've seen mine... it was fun, but I wasn't making much power. I sill have it and the Weiand dual quad intake. If I get another project car like a 55 Savoy or something like that, I'll freshen up the poly and put it in that. But starting fresh? yeppirs... lots of money for the 3 parts available currently.

I admit the 383 would be a cheaper route IF I intend to modify. I am old and wore out and just enjoy the sound of any v8 over the slants I have played with the last 10 years. The hemis and maxis are long past! I have the SB bell and a BB bell will set me back $250 maybe. I can get a poly for $400 ( high) and a 383 for $600. I came here from Missouri 2 1/2 years ago and everything back there is cheaper than here, everything!! OK so gas is the same!!!!
Not sure what is the situation with the new poly parts since Roland passed. A 2 bbl will probably get me there anyway!!!!!

the poly block has thicker walls, which is awesome for durability and even better for stroking and boring. Piston selection is limited but custom pistons don't cost that much more. And yeah, intake prices are up there, BUT if you don't care about originality, an LS manifold has the exact same port spacing and bolt pattern. There is some port matching and a spacer that needs done for it to be perfect but it is a cheaper alternative. Ford small block headers have the same exhaust port spacing, just need poly flanges welded to them and some massaging to get them to fit a manual steer car. wont work for power steering. So the other option is 3rd gen hemi shortly headers/manifolds from a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but again, need poly flanges.

Id go poly. Trust me, the WTF looks from "car guys" at car shows when you pop that hood and that wide *** 318 is in there is worth every penny.

Didn't know that about the LS intake! And at least you didn't call it a 'wide block' :D

An LS intake on a poly, holy smokes!

I gotta see that, not sure how bad I need to see it though.
