Is there a way to identify a Hemi 4 speed that's installed in the car; casting numbers, etc.?

1968 tailhousing #C-97623 is for 18 spline, 1969 # C-99128 is for 18 spline. 1966, 1967, 1970 18 and 23 trans used same tailshaft part number. All I know about it.

Are you trying to see if it's a number's matching trans? If so there's a pad on the main casing with the vin number unless you have a warranty case trans. Here's a link to help you out.

If you really want to know it is an 18 spline with correct gears you would have to inspect. 23 and 18 splines can be interchanged between housings and such. So I guess it really depends on what you trying to really know. There is no easy identification though the casting number on tail shaft can help for some models.
Could you look through clutch fork hole to see front bearing retainer size where throwout rides? Better yet remove inspection cover.

Agreed, but at least running the vin may point you in the right direction in terms of originality to the car and thus the trans specs 383 23 spline vs 426/440 18 spline (if original internal are in there it can be tricky without taking off the inspection cover.) Cheers
