I break in all my engine's with Valvoline VR 1 Racing Oil 10 W 40. It's also a very good oil to run after break in.

I broke in my solid flat tappet cam with brad penn 30 WT. break in oil

Which has changed it's name to Penn Grade now. You might find some old stock Brad Penn out there.

It's still the same formula as when it was Kendall back in the day. It's still green!

I used it for break in (flat tappet) with no problems then after 500 miles used their 10w 30w partial synthetic.

Most people have suggested 30 weight. Is there a reason you prefer 40 ?
No particular reason, the oil weight is the same, the 30 or 40 just denotes how much heat it will take before breakdown.
I run 20 W 50 in my older engines that haven't been rebuilt.

Do not run zinc additives in SN OIL
Get pre mixed break in oil for break in
after break in depends on clearances and lots of other factors
If you are going to break in with straight weight oil get it warm first
and pre lube
I think the new Corvette Ow 40 Synthetic has 990 PPM zinc
See Mobil 1 ESP data sheet
but we should be checking mfg data sheets on a regular basis as there is constant change
right now the best spec for 0W-20 is VW-Proche- Audi 508
so if you need that for VVT...

Agree, the high detergent in the oil prevents your additives from doing what it claims.

More to it than that
the VW 508 oil has a calcium based EP formula for example
adding Zinc to a SN oil can reduce EP
the new Corvette oil is DEXOS 2

these new oils (the ones made from Natural gas) require less additive for viscosity so they shear down much less
