pre cleaning for paint?

I agree with Jim. Just a little Dawn and hot water. Then rinse with hot hot water. The part dries better. Then blow dry with compressed air. Sometime I use a hair dryer on heat, so the part will dry quicker. I always wear nitrate gloves when washing small parts so not to get my skin oils on the part to prevent fish eyes. I also use gloves on the parts until they are painted and dry. I wash primed parts with Dawn also before final coat.
Sure you can get all fancy with some wipe and wash, about 80 bucks a gallon but the soap will do just fine on small parts like suspension, brackets and hardware. Sure for the body and bigger panels use a proper wipe and wash.
It works on the baby ducks just fine. lol

All good advice above. Alcohol is an even better degreaser than soap/water....but soap/water is just fine and dawn or other dish soap is a great choice. If you want overkill, do soap/water followed by alcohol. The alcohol will help get all the water off and dries really fast (but flammable)

I hate using water on any bare metal
to me that promotes rust
solvents only for me..

Depends on what is to be painted.
suspension , rear end housing, bottom of car ect. degreaser & scrub , then pressure soap and water , repeat if needed.
body steel after blasting, dawn dish soap and hot water, every inch of car, cowl, inside doors, hinges, qt window wells, and pillars 3X if soda blasted. Then wipe & blow dry and seal with epoxy.
Primer on car just use PPG 330 grease and wax remover, wipe on with soaked new rag and follow with dry new rags allow time for evap before tac or sealer.
If you soap and water the primer you need 3 dry days to get it out of the primer.

you guys are going to bark, but i use lighter fluid, cleans grease very well and leave no resude ready for primer.

From a guy who paints. For bare metal parts acetone or wax and grease remover. For primed surface either wax and grease remover or Dawn and water. And allow to dry a day. For painted surfaces wax and grease remover or Dawn and water. My ratio is a Windex bottle full of water with about 5 drops Dawn. I wet sand all my parts with this solution.

I am painting the body, It's down to bare metal, Just need to clean it for primer. Thank you.

If it’s bare metal and your shooting the epoxy coat I would just use wax and grease remover. Product your using should also list what the proper cleaning products are for it.
