I have a 68 coronet 440 model. I have changed out the 318 & 904 to a 383 & 727. I also changed out the rearend to a 69 or 70? 8 3/4 742. I'm in need of a driveshaft, but have no clue what to look for in a used one, how to determine what i need, or wether to have one made. Any insight would be appreciated.

Have one built! It's easy. Make sure everything is bolted up in place(Trans and rear end), buy a yoke, stab the yoke and bottom it out and make a mark with a sharpie, back the yoke out 1" and make a new mark. Then measure from the center of where the u joint would go to the flange on the 3rd member which also indicates the center line of the u joint and then take those dimensions and have one built with your new yoke and whatever u joints you want to use. I know there's a dimension that I'm sure someone will post, but it should be a standard length for your setup.

What Zep said but depending on what yoke is on the rear. I'd look for a 7290 or a 1350 trans yoke. A 742 could have 1330 u-joint not sure if they came with other u-joints. Build the whole driveshaft with 7290 or 1350 u-joints. Then if needed you can buy a combination u-joint to adapt to rear end if necessary. With the 7290 or 1350 it will handle more HP if you add more power if you add it in the future. Measuring for driveshaft length have weight on the suspension not hanging.

I would not trust any used drive shaft, a custom HD thick wall version is inexpensive enough. 1350 U joints front & rear in my opinion.

Diameter of shaft makes a big difference in strength
dbl check length with weight on the wheels
much different than with rear end hanging
or did the references above say that?
get joints you can grease
and use ONLY genuine MOPAR or DANA/SPICER Joints
they are "deep case" hardened
not flame "hardened" or electro induction "hardened"
cheap joints quickly Brinell through the "hardening" and leave you stranded or hurt U
so put in a drive shaft loop

If you don't supply the trans yoke the measuring process is different than c to c with a yoke. Had a driveshaft 2" to short so order a shaft it was made 1.75" longer. The new yoke was a longer than the one I measured off of. Length was ok but just barely.
